Mr. and Miss Cullen Baker Contest,
parade, rodeo, music and, of
course, food.
The fair was named for Con-
federate loyalist Cullen Baker, who
defied Yankee authority following
the Civil War and was finally killed
for his exploits. To some, Baker
represents a hero; to others, an out-
law. In either case, his memory lives
in the annual event named for him.
For the second year, a profes-
sional championship rodeo will be
held Friday and Saturday, Nov. 2
and 3, on the Brooks Farm on Hwy.
74 west of Bloomburg.

same time.
"We can use it for 'academic en-
hancement' purposes," Sloan ex-
plained, "but we can't use it for
salary supplements, personnel or
athletics. Academic enhancement
covers a whole lot of ground."
The Queen City elementary
school was culled from all of the
public schools in the state and
placed in a group with schools com-
parable to enrollment, district size,
minority mix, household incomes,
and other factors. Hileman was then
selected as being in the top 10 per-
cent of the schools in that group.
Having made the semi-final cut,
the school administration had to
submit information requested by the
committee on an application for the
award. Shortly after entering the in-
formation, Sloan received a letter in-
viting him to attend the awards
ceremony in Austin.
"I honestly didn't know until I got
there that we were going to get any
money," the educalor said. "They
published the list of the big money
winners a week or so back in some
of the big newspapers and we
weren't listed, so I didn't expect to
get any."
As for the "academic enhance-
ment" the $25,000 will be used to
obtain, Sloan said that a committee
comprised of teachers from the
school and others will get together
and make that decision.
At the ceremony, Sloan was con-
gratulated on the "outstanding in-
struction you and your staff are
providing the students in your
school. Your example is expected to
motivate other schools to follow in
your footsteps."
