1 am sure that many farmers
are already making plans for wa-
termelon production during the
coming season.
With the disease problems of
last years crop, farmers should
do all that is possible to select
land for melon production that
has not been planted in water-
melons for a number of years, or
if at all possible land that has
never been planted in watermel-
ons. Several of the watermelon
diseases are able to live in the
soil for a number of years, and
with weather conditions just right
as they were in 1955, they become
a serious problem.
Seed treatment is also of ma-
jor importance in the control of
watermelon disease. The fungus
which causes damping off, wilt
i and anthracnose may be carried
untreated seed. Bichloride of
mercury (corrosive sublimate) is
especially effective against anth-
racnose and will destroy the germs
of damping and wilt if they are
on the seed. Dissolve one ounce
of bichloride of mercury in seven
and one half gallons of warm wa-
ter, or one tablet in one pint of
water. Soak the seed five minutes,
then rinse throughly and dry. If
old seed sacks are to be used for
seed storage, treat them in the
same solution. The material
should be mixed in glass jars or
earthen or wooden containers.
Bichloride of mercury is poison-
ous and should be handled care-
fully.
Dry seed treatment gives pro-
tection against damping off. Shake
the seed and the chemical to-
gether to insure a good coating
of the chemical. One to two tea-
spoonfuls of Cuprocide, Arasan,
Semesan or Spergon per pound ol
seed will provide a good coating
for the seed.
