Forester warns of winter fire danger
H
The season for dangerous
forest fires is here, Bennie
Wood of Naples, district crew-
leader for the Texas Forest
Service headquarters at Lin-
den, warned this week.
There is a drastic difference
between the forest fire occur-
rence this fall over last fall,
Wood said.
During the last four months
of 1963 the Linden headquar-
ters recorded more than 400
fires. This year over the same
period, there have been less
than 50 fires.
Weather factors have been
in our favor this year, Wood

QUALITY IS THE ONLY BARGAIN
said, but a few days without
rain could easily make a dan-
gerous fire situation.
Morris county has had only
one fire that burned four acres
since Sept. 1, 1964.
Over the Christmas holi-
days, the forestry service ex-
pects an increase in the num-
ber of forest and grass fires.
Forestry service personnel
offers these precautions to

help prevent fires:
Don't keep that Christmas
tree too long. It becomes a fire
hazard as it dries out.
When disposing of Christ-
mas wrappings be sure and
burn them in a safe trash
burner when the wind is low,
and keep check until the fire
is dead out.
If fireworks are allowed, be
extra careful. They can start
fires as well as being a danger
to those shooting them.
When in the fields and
woods, crush out all smokes
and matches. Be sure all camp
and warming fires are dead
out before they are left.

Jack Frost and freezing
weather and the leaves come
tumbling down.
Naturally, they clutter the
yards and garden but they can
be a boost to next year's flow-
er or vegetable garden if han-
dled properly.
Put them in a compost pile.
Although it may be easier to
burn them, the extra time re-
quired will return big divi-
dends.
The compost can be used
next year to increase organic
matter in the soil or for mulch-
ing flowers, shrubs or vege-
tables. Organic matter in-
creases the soil's ability to
hold water and plant nutrients
and makes the soil easier to
work.
Mulches are valuable for
controlling soil temperature

and conserving moisture.
Making a compost pile is a
simple operation. Scrap lum-
ber or a few feet oi.' net wire
and four posts will take care
of the enclosure.
Starting with a six-inch lay-
er of leaves, for a four foot
square enclosure. dissolve
rbout three-fourths cup of
commercial fertilizer such as
12-12-12 in water and sprin-
kle the solution over the
leaves. For each 50 square
ieet, spread about one pine
of fertilizer over each six inch
layer.
Alternate layers should be
added until the pile reaches
the desired height The top
layer should be left somewhat
saucer-shaped to aid in holding
water on the leaves.
Decomposition will be en-
hanced if the leaves are turn-
ed and mixed occasionally and
if water is added during dry
periods. In areas where soils
are acid, the chemist recom-
mends adding a cup of lime
to the fertilizer before spread-
ing it on the leaves.

Merry Christmas, every le!
The wish is old, 'tis true,
Yet as we send it on its way
It glistens fresh and new.

Enriched with friendship, warm with love,
A time of pure delight!

Hard to believe? Maybe .. . but it's true. The Ford ride proved quieter in tests con-
