T. J. HOLLAND
T. J. Holland of Avin-
ger has his name in the
news this week because
of a durable devotion to
civic duty. The Lone Star
Steel Company fire de-
partment employee de-
cided to offer his serv-
ices as a school board
member in 1952 when his
first son entered school.
Today, the boy is 18, a
college freshman and Hol-
land is still serving on
the Avinger school board.
Holland had come to
Lone Star Steel in 1951
as a mechanical mainten-
ance employee. He mov-
ed to the fire department
in 1959.
The move led to an-
other civic interest. As
his interest in fire and
safety increased, he mov-
ed into the job of fire
marshal for his home
city, he has been a mem-
ber of the Avinger volun-
teer department since he
moved there in 1951.
A native of Cass coun-
ty, he was away for three
years during World War
II serving as a radio and
radar operator for the
Eighth Air Force.
He is a past master of
the Masonic Lodge in Av-
inger, member of the
Baptist Church and has
found time along the way
during the past decade to
serve in various boy
scouting posts.
He is now cubmaster
for a local pack. Hollrnd
is married, has a daugh-
ter and another son be-
sides the college fresh-
man.
As the youngest son is
nine, he will have an in-
terest in Avinger school
affairs for several years
to come.
