School board elects teachers

Monday night was employ-
ment time for Pewitt school
personnel.
The school board approved
the employment of 14 people
already working at Carver
school under the federal gov-
ernment's Title 1 program,
and voted new contracts for
ten Pewitt high school teach-
ers, thirteen Pewitt elementary
teachers, and fifteen Carver
teachers.
The Title 1 program em-
ployees are Chester Anderson,
annie Boyd, Floncell Hight.
irlee Leftwich, Paul Sanders,
nn Stafford, Benny Webster,
ert Wilson, Carol Dudley.
Roosevelt Peel, Betty Rober-
son, Jeraldine Shepherd, Vir-
ginia Turner and Helen Sand-

bie Foster, Mrs. Alicia Hamp-
ton, Mrs Orene Slider, Miss
Juanita Koon, Bo Granberry,

Tomberlain, and Mrs Louise
Palmore a conditional contract
depending upon attendance.
Pewitt elementary teachers
re-elected were Mrs. Janetta
Brown, Mrs. Kathy Canant,
Mrs. Bernice Cole, Mrs. Louise
Davis, Mrs. Maxine Davis, Mrs.
Maydelle Ellis, Mrs. Loretta
Griffin, Mrs. Lola Hamilton,
Mrs. Dorothy Huddleston, Mrs.

Cheerleaders
chosen for '66-67
Cheerleaders for the 1966-67
school year were elected in a
meeting of the pep squad last
week.
Those chosen were Becky
Brian, Kay Frost, Brenda
Gibbs and Dorothy Adams.
Moore, Mrs Irene Smith and
Airs. Nell Young.
Carver teachers voted new
contracts were 0. Z. Mitchell,
Tommie K. Carter, A. F. Da-
cus, Lois Dacus, Thelma Hall.
R. C. Hardiman, Allonie Jack-
pon, Mary King, H. D. McCall.
Dorothy Matthews, Ella Mitch-
ell, Pauline Roberson, Minnie
Rogers, Maurie Rowe and Wal-
ter Tillman.
The board delayed action on
one Carver teacher because
she was delinquent in school
taxes.
John Kenna, Pewitt band di-
rector who had resigned earli-
er and then withdrew the res-
ignation, submitted a new re-
quest that his resignation be
accepted by the board Monday
night and it was.
First-year teachers will be
considered at the May meet-
ing.
Ir. other business, the board:
Authorized purchase of two
new 60-passenger buses
Put off until the budget is
prepared a request for a pay
raise by Mountie Kidwell as
store manager and transporta-
tion supervisor.
Authorized purchase of an
air conditioning unit for the
tax office.
Approved Form 441-B in
compliance with the Civil
Rights Act.
Approved the assignment of
professional personnel for
1966-67 the same as for the
current term.
Turned down a request by
Naples Mayor Rex Allen to
pass over the school's claim
to part of the money from
low-rent housing in lieu of
taxes.

Thomas wins
two track events
at Pittsburg meet
Leroy Thomas won the 100
and 220-yard dashes in Pitts-
burg's Key Club Relays and
led the five-man Pewitt team
to seventh place in the final
standings.
His time in the 100-yard
dash was a slow 10.5 but he
stepped off the 220-yard dash
in 22.5.
He also anchored the 440-
vard relay team to a fourth
place finish, running with Tip
Brian, John Kirk and Tom
Brian.
Wayne Lowery added points
to the Pewitt total with a
sixth place in the shot put.
Daingerfield won the relay
title. DeKalb, Hooks, Winns-
boro, Pittsburg and Honey
Grove finished ahead of Pewitt
in the meet.
Gary Luttrel! new
council president
Gary Luttrell has been elect-
ed president of the Pewitt high
school student council for the
1966-67 term.
Becky Brian was elected as
vice president, and Kay Frost
to serve as secretary and treas
urer.

Junior high relays set 10 new records in meet last week
The girls' track team had a
practice meet last Thursday.
They ar.j called the Brahma-
ettes.
The FIIA girls had a called
meeting last week in order
that officers could tell what
their duties were in prepara-
tion for the election of new
officers for next year.
Western Day will be observ-
ed Thursday and Friday of
next week, April 14-15.
Six weeks tests were being
given Wednesday and Thurs-
day of this week. Wc wish eve-
ryone a lot of luck.
Schoo! collects
$446 in back tax
The Pewitt school district
collected $446.84 in delinquent
taxes during the month of
March.
The amount included $398.-
18 in tax and $11.81 in pen-
alty and interest for 1965,
$4.50 in tax and 68 cents in
penalty and interest for 1964,
$4.50 in tax and 95 cents in
penalty and interest for 1963,
and $14.02 in tax and $12.20
in penalty and interest for
1952.
Schools out for
Easter holiday
Pewitt and Carver students
will have a long week end holi-
day for Easter.
The schools will be dismiss-
ed at the usual time Thursday
afternoon and classes won't be
resumed until Tuesday.
Ten of 13 records set last
year in the Pewitt junior high
relays were broken last Friday
night in the second annual
meet.
Pewitt's ninth graders com-
peted with ten other teams
and broke six of the records
in winning their own meet.
Steve Kirk threw the discus
110 feet and 11 inches to bet-
ter the old mark by 10 feet
and 1 inch.
He also set a new shot put
mark of 42 feet and one-half
inch. The old mark was 38
feet and 3*4 inches.
Doug Robinson won the pole
vault at 9 feet and 8 inches,
and Edmonson placed third in
the broad jump.
The Pewitt 440-yard relay
team made up of Mike Towler,
Johnny Robison, David Edmon-
son and Terry Roach cut off
0.7 second on the old record
as they won the event in 48.2.
Ronnie Daniel won the 880-
yard run in record time of
2:16 and Jimmy Wyninegar
finished third.
Johnny Robison stepped off
the 120-yard low hurdles in
14.5, a new record.
Towler, Roach, Jack McCoy
and Mat Gibson teamed up on
the mile relay and clipped 5
seconds off the old mark for a
new time of 3:53.9.
Hooks' Hall won the 70-yard
high hurdles with Towler and
Merriman running second and
fourth. Howell of Daingerfield
was first in the 100-yard dash
and Robison was third.
Mat Gibson placed second in
the 440-yard dash and Edmon-
son ran fourth. Roach ran a
close second to Daingerfield's
Parrish in the 220-yard dash.
Pewitt had 141 points in the
division and Daingerfield was
second with 122'/a, Hooks was
third with 70V&, Liberty-Eylau
fourth with 30, and Atlanta
fifth with 29.
New Boston, Winnsboro, Gil-
mer, Pittsburg, Ore City and
DeKalb also competed.
Pewitt's team finished third
in the seventh and eighth
grade division with 77 points
behind DeKalb with 129 and
Daingerfield with 113.
The junior Calves won only
