Pastor back en duty after surgery
By Miss Daisy Heard
The new year began with a
bright crisp day. Here's hop-
ing many made resolutions to
attend church and Sunday
School even better than in the
year past.
The Rev. McQueen was able
to fill his pulpit at Harris
Chapel Sunday. Cornett churcii
goers can look for him to
preach here Sunday, Jan. 8.
He has been disabled follow-
ing surgery.
Major Jack Barnes and fam-
ily left Monday for Arizona
after living for ten days at
Miss Daisy Heard's rent house.
He completed plans for a new
house at his farm. He retires
on May 1.
The R. L. McCord family
had its Christmas dinner and
tree in the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Weldon McCord of New
Boston on Christmas day.
The C. D. Betts family held
its annual Christmas celebra-
tion Monday, Dec. 26. All were
present except Grady, who had
to work, and one son-in-law.
Mr. and Mrs. Hollis Whitten-
berg and children of Dallas
remained until Tuesday after
the C. D. Betts Christmas cel-
ebration.
Mr. and Mrs. Palmer Martin
and children of Odessa spent
the Christmas week end with
the Fred Holmes family.
Mr. and Mrs. Marshall
Vaughan and the Cotton
Vaughan family spent a week
with relatives and friends. The
Vaughans work in Dallas.
Vann and Bill Heard of
Houston spent the Christmas
week end with their sisters,
Daisy and Janet Heard.
Mrs Ada Gibson of Hughes
Springs and her son, Euriel
of Dallas, were Christmas din-
ner guests of Miss Daisy Heard.
We extend sympathy to Mrs.
Vance Gibson and the Beau-
champ family in the death of
Mrs. Betty Beauchamp at a
Shreveport hospital New Years
eve. Funeral services were
held at 10 a.m. Monday at the

cat a week ago Saturday. She
is taking shots for rabies.

land and Ricky of Dallas spent
Saturday and Sunday with her

ael are taking their invalid
daughter. Barbara, 5, to a Den-
ver hospital this week.
The Mildred Betts visited
from Tuesday until Thursday
of Christmas week with rela-
tives in Beaumont.
The Woodson Walker fam-
ily had Christmas dinner at
the J. 0. Walkers in Hughes
Springs.
Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Cornett
and Mr. and Mrs. R. G. Mason
of Hughes Springs spent Sat-
urday with Mr. and Mrs. Noel
Higgins of Clarksville.
The Ellis Cornetts attended
the Mason family Christmas
celebration dinner and tree at
the George Mason home in
Hughes Springs.
Larry Glenn Walker and a
friend, Lorenzo Barnett of
Karnack, spent from Wednes-
day through Friday deer hunt-
ing Larry killed an 8-pointer.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Barnett
and family of Port Arthur,
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Anthony
of Naples, and Mrs. Kennard
Fleming and children of Na-
ples were guests of the Mil-
dred Betts during Christmas.
Mrs. Hazel Waiker, Mrs. Lu-

Redbud Retreat, and Mrs. Al-
ice Betts rind Mrs. Carrie
Fleming in Naples Saturday.
The WSCS will hold its reg-
ular meeting at 2 p.m. Tues-
day. The zone meeting will be
held in Jefferson at 10 a.m.
Thursday. All members are
urged to attend.

Six employees of the Department of Agricul-
ture were honored for superior performance in
1966. They were presenter, jertificates of mer-
it and cash awards by state conservationist H.
N. Smith. Included was Irvin U. Musgrove of
Naples, second from right. The others were
Ted H. Elders, Martin L. Barrington, Jimmy W.
Thomas, Lee Fisher and Norwood White The
award received by the Linden work unit was
for superior performance in providing techni
cal assistance to the Marion-Cass Soil and Wa
ter Conservation District in planning and ap
plication of soil, water and plant conservation
practices. Musgrove, Thomas and White work
in Marion and Cass counties, Elders ap.d Bar
rington in Cass county, and Fisher with several
soil conservation districts in northeast Texas.
