The four important factors
for the success "f baby chicks
nre correct feeding, exercise,
sanitation and temperature.
Feeditig. For the first feed
either corn'bread or oattneal is
good. The corn bread should
be cooked hard, crumbled and
browned again. Place on the
crumb boatd or something that
can be removed after the chicks
have eaten all they want for five
minutes. Fonl should never be
left, on tbe ground for it will be-
come tainted aud cause bowel
trouble. During the same time
let, them have some skimmed
milk. Feed them either corn
bread or oatmeal all they will
eat for five minutes at a time
five times daily. On the tenth
day add 10 per cent of hard boil-
ed eggs to thii mixture, in from
two to four week-) gradually de-
crease the number of times of
feeding from five to three times.
Make two of these a scratch feed
of two kinds of cracked grain.
From four to six weeks gradual-
ly reduce the number of feed-
ings from three to two times dai
ly. Let these feedings be scratch
feed, but keep a dry mash before
them of two parts com meal, one
part wheat shorts|or ground mi
lo, one-half part of high grade
sifted meat scraps.
Preparing the Coop: Th
floor of the hroon coop should
be covered with clean coarse
sand and finely cut digestible
material, cut all'alla is goo-'i
The feed and drinking vessels
should be washed with warm wa
ter and soap, then thoroughly
scalded and disinfected with a
strong disinfectant A good
plan is to have two sets of ves
sels and use them on alternats
days so they may always be kept
clean aod fresh.
The hen should not be let out
of the coop or extention run un
til the chicks are two weeks old.
Tliis will prevent chilling; from
coming in contact with damp
grass, aud exercising the weak
one too much. Temperature
either too cold or too hot, will
oftimes cause bowel trouble.
Therefore, over crowding should
be avoided; chicks should not be
allowed to become chilled.
Giye chicks plenty of sour
skimmed milk, fresh water,
chick size grit, charcoal and
plenty of green food
Keep chicks warm at ull times
Allow the chicks to run on fresh
ground. Keep them dry and
free from vermin. Make them
work. Don't let them crowd.
Kill all weak and ailing chicks.
Never feed anything that is not
clean and free from inold. Do
not use moldy litter.
