Great Help for Farmers.
Appreciable progress during
the incoming year is anticipated
by the Texas Farm Life Com-
mission in the two chief phases
of its work—the encouragement
of a co-operative>marketing plan
and the institution of rural
credit system.
The latter phase of the* Farm
Life Commission's work is con-
sidered of vast importance, not
only to the immediate needs of
farmers in Teias but important
in its effect upon the class of
tenantry in the State and the
consequent influence upon the
general welfare of the people of
the State. Under present ar-
rangements and condiiions for
securing loans for farm needs, it
is recognized by the members of
the commission, that the farm-
ing interests are compelled to
pay premiums on loans, quite
out of proportion to the risk in-
volved. The expense of time
loans and the hesitation with
which the financial interests re-
gard farm loans are two of the
conditions which thecommission
hopes to ameliorate.
Edwin Chamberlain of San-An-
tonio, prominently connected
with the banking interests of
that city, is a member of the
commission and is at the head of
the committee having in charge
the institution of a more saluta-
ry credit system for the benefit
of the farming interests. Kir.
Chamberlain, in addition to be-
ing thoroughly conversant with
the financial status in Texas and
the United States is also quite
familiar with the conditions
along that lino in Europe. He
tad studied conditions there at
first hand and lie, with other
members of the eon.mission, sees
a remedy that he believes can be
applied.—Farm and Fireside.

Hungry Coyotes.
Trinidad, Colo., Januarys.—A
Scotch collie dog saved the lives
of his two masters, Louis and
Samuel, 10 and 12 years old,
respectively, who were attacked
by three hungef-crnzed coyotes
on the snowclad plains 10 miles
from here. The boys were badly
bitten by the beast and their
clothes were practically torn to
ribbons. The dog was badly
lacerated. The children had been
sent to an uncle's ranch to get
provisions. Half way over the
trail they were attacked by the
coyotes. The collie charged the
beast-, killed two of them.
