WEEKLY LETTER
Silver Legislation.
The President baa let it be
known that he Id opposed to sil
*ar legislation this sestion; he
desires to Use thd power that be
&a« Under present lawn to buy
some silver awaiting an interna
tional agreement. This does not
seem to satisfy many of the ur

now.
Publicity of Income Tax Returns
The revenue bill is being con
sidered by a conference commit,
tee of two bouses. We believe
the tight is won for full publicity
of returns of individols to ptv
vent such tax frauds as perpetra
ted by Mitchell, Morgan, Wiggins
and others. Secrecy is a badge
of fraud. All public funds should
be called and disbursed subject
to public inspection.
Bankbead Hill
The Bankbead bill was voted
for with more misgivings by
members of Congress than any
other legislative proposal this
session. The president recorn
mended the legislation and ask
ed for its passage; the farmers
desired a way to compel the non
cooperators to cooperate, as
their program was being disrupt
ed by them. The bill, as passed,
may be effective two years, this
year without lurther findings of
the Government, next year it will
be necessary for two thirds of all
cotton farmers to favor it before
It will be put into effect. The
tenant farmer who cultivates a
■mall acreage will be eutitled to
the same vote on the question of
law's continuance for another
year as Mr. Oscar Johnston who
cultivates 50,0G0 acres in tbe
Mississippi Delta.
Under this law farmer Jobn
Doa is allotted ten bales for this
year. If be produces twelve, he
will have to pay a high tax on
tbe two bales if sold this year; he
can hold it over until next year
and market it with eight other
bales without a tax. (f he pro
duces five bales this year, instead
of ten—bis allotment—he will be
permitted to carry the allotment
over and produce fifteen next
year without any sort of tax.

SCHOOL NEWS
Last week I received another
grant of state aid for more than
$10,0(K).00. Tbe aid in the state
will be decreased from lant year,
but this county will qualify for
more aid.
Education is worth while for
its own sake and I believe by
having a well trained mind life
will be a greater pleasure. It has
been said that when all other
possessions are swept away, ed-

this be true, we would be able to

Teachers aud trustees should
see that all text books are put
away under lock and key. Be
sure that tbe library is rat proof
because tbe books must be pro
tected.
It is very necessary for the lo-
cal trustees to file their informa
tion with the County Board in
the near future. This has refer-
ence to the information that the
different school boards promised
to furnish.
Teachers will please file their
contracts in ibis office as soon as
possible after signing. It is nec
essary for me to know this infor
mation to save the time of trus
trees and other applicants.

We are indeed sorry that Lin-

this year to have entered the
contest alone. However, the trip i
to Mexia has put so much pep !
into us we are already working
for a "bigger" and better band
so that Linden can enter next
year and win alone.
The band will play May 8 at

as a part of the program for
tradesday. Come out aud give
us a boost.
