Society, formed to preserve the Am-
erican buffalo, are reported to be suo
cessful, the number of the animals
in this country and Canada having
increased from 1,100 to 15,000 in

G. P. Savage of the Cold Springs
Jersey Farm at Van Alstyne has
sold to Ed C. Lasater of Palfurias
the champion Class AAA junior 3-
year-old Jersey heifer, Torono's Ma-
ria. The consideration involved was
•$250. This animal has a record of
>'41.51 pounds of butter fat in a test
ilasting 305 days.
Miss Ruth Cross, a former Texas
girl and graduate of the University
of Texas, now residing in the East,
lias signed a contract for the iilnv
:ing of her novel "The Golden Co-
:coon," according to information re-
ceived at the Texas State Library.

Texas in the early fall.
Charged with operating an airplane
-while under the influence of liquor
ran aviator of Ransom, Kan., was
arrested at Gordon City, after alight-
ing with his plane in a field north of
rtown. He will also have to answer
:to charges of possessing and trans-
porting liquor and drunkness. Officers
isay a half gallon of liquor was found
in the plane.
Arizona farmers and stockmen in
greased their profits by $252,830 dur-
ing the last year as a result of ro-
dent control carried on under the
Bureau of Biological Survey and the
Agricultural extension division of

WASHINGTON
Federal and State Governments
have expended $1,688,047 in fifteen
months to advance the welfare of
mothers and babies under the Fed-
eral maternity and Infancy act, the
children's bureau of the United States
Department of Labor announced. Of
this total the States expended 9641,-
523, and the Federal Government
$1,046,624.
That 7,000;000 new voters will as-
sume the duties of citizenship this
fall for the first time, is declared
by Mrs. Louise Dodson of the wo-
men's bureau of the Republican
National Committee, who considers
this tact proof of the Importance
of the new voter's campaign now
being conducted
The Chicago. Rock Island & Pa-
cific Railroad received authority from
the Interstate Commerce Commission
to fibundon five miles of Its line
from Coaigate to Lehigh, Ok.
Senator Morris Sheppard lias re-
turned from Texas, and, as soon as
official matters can be disposed of,
will enter the national campaign
to speak for the Davis and Bryan
ticket.
President Coolidge personally con-
gratulated the Washington buseball
team on its rise to the top of t|e
American League and wished it good
luck on its road trip. At the invita-
tion of the President, members of
the team and Clark Griffith, the
owner, went to the White House
and were received by Mr. Cooolidge.

Examiners for the Interstate Com-
merce Commission recommended to
the commission that authority bei
granted to the Waco, Beaumont,
Trinity & Sabine Railway to build
an extension of its ro#d from Living-
ston southwest to Port Neches, cer-
tain sections of the line to be built
only in the event trackage rights
can not be obtained over existing
lines.

FOREIGN
The Bureau of Labor reports that
7,2 1 Filipino laborers went to
Hawaii during 1923. In the same
period 1,406 laborers returned from
Hawaii to the Philippines.
The Italian Cable Company has
announced that it is about to lay a
cable between Italy and Azores. It
hoped that the new direct commun-
ication between Italy and New York,
through the Western Union, will be
ready by the end of October.
Japan has ordered 140.000 machine
guns from the British Vickers Com-
pany. which is working on the order
night and day. The Scrutton Com-
pany, is executing a large Japanese
oider for a special type of tractor
lorry, to be shipped at an early date.
Zane Grey, novelist, who has been
tuna fishing in Nova Scotian waters
has purchased the three-masted
schooner Maple Land and will take
it back to New York, where it will
be transformed into a yacht. When
the transformation has been com-
pleted, the author and his party
will cruise to South America.
During the turning over of old
documents In the Record Office in
London, a batch of New South Wqles
postage stamps of the 1885 issue was
discovered. Collectors value them at
$4,500. The stamps were attached to
a report sent to the Colonial Sec-
retary by the Governor of New
South Wales. .
Although Lindenburg, Germany,
does not average a fire a month
the fire department is not allowed to
loaf. In summer the firemen operate
the municipal farm and in winter
they are woodchoppers in the muni-
cipal forest. Income from the two
sources have helped to clear the
town debt.
Premier Herriot of France intends
to keep his promise to come to the
assembly of the League of Nations
in September, according to formal
notice given the secretariat by the
French Government that the French
delegation would be composed of
M. Herriot, former Premier Briand,
former Minister of Education Henri
de Jouvenet and Paul Boncour, So-
cialist leader.
