WYLIE - City crews are taking
some precautionary measures after
a 78-year-old Wylie man died from
a possible case of West Nile Virus
last week.
John Phillips, who lived on
Windsor Drive., died Friday, Oct.
14, of possible West Nile Virus
infection. According to information
from the city, the test results on Mr.
Phillips were inconclusive and
Collin County health department
officials do not consider Mr.
Phillips death a West Nile case.
Public Information Officer Mark
Witter said the city was notified last
week of the possible WNV ease and
began increased surveillance and
mosquito trapping in the area
around Windsor Drive. Windsor is
located ofT North Ballard Avenue
north of the railroad tracks.
"City crews are vacuuming out
the storm water inlets in that neigh-
borhood," Witter said.
The increased observation has
yielded nothing unusual and no
confirmed West Nile Virus-carrying
mosquitoes, he said.
Although this case may not be
considered West Nile, county offi-
cials said area residents should still
be taking precautions against being
bitten by mosquitoes.
"As long as it remains warm,
there continues to be mosquitoes,"
said Janet Glowicz, epidemiologist
with the Collin County Health
Department. "Whether this case
was or wasn't West Nile, there is
still a threat."
Mosquitoes will continue to be a
problem until the first freeze, coun-
ty officials said.
According to the Center for
Disease Control, about one in 150
people infected with WNV will
develop severe illness with symp-
toms including high fever,
headache, neck stiffness, stupor,
disorientation, coma, tremors, con-
vulsions, muscle weakness, vision
loss, numbness and paralysis.
Symptoms usually develop
symptoms between three and 14
days after infection and people over
50 are generally more at risk for
developing serious WNV symp-
toms.
The best way to avoid infection,
according to the CDC, is to take
precautions when outdoors.
To protect yourself from mosqui-
to bites, the CDC recommends
using an insect repellent on exposed
skin and spraying clothing with
repellents containing permcthrin;
wearing long-sleeved shirts and
long pants and placing mosquito
netting over infant carries when
outdoors; consider staying indoors
at dawn and dusk prime mosquito
activity limes; and remove all
sources of standing water where
mosquitoes might breed.
"At least once or twice a week,
empty water from flower pots, pet
water dishes, birdbalhs, swimming
pool covers, buckets, barrels and
clean out clogged rain gutters," the
CDC recommends.
"Ultrasonic devices are not effec-
tive in preventing mosquito bites,"
the CDC said.
An obituary for Mr. Phillips was
not available at presstime.

Our last week was so busy getting
ready for the Fallfest, we didn't do a
lot of activities, bul we did take in the
new Fire Wheel Town Center and
really enjoyed it. The stores are beau-

tiful and well stocked with ihe latest
merchandise. Of course we came
home with purchases!
This week we went to the Bob
Woodruff Park for a picnic. The
weather was ordered perfect, the
socializing was wonderful, and the
ducks appreciated us. At the age of
10 we could play hopscotch, jump
rope, jacks, and catch, on this day we
didn't do too well, but we tried. We
did have a lot of fun being children
again. This is a must do again event.
We had our wonderful delicious
carry-in luncheon last Wednesday
with Ray McConnell entertaining us
on the piano. Such beautiful music
you can only imagine.
Today we went to see "In Her
Shoes" with Shjrley McLain and that
was a good day also.
Tomorrow we will go on our
"international mystery trip of history
and intrigue", so I will report on it
next'Week. Right now it is still a mys-
tery!
Our committee meeting yielded
several suggestions as to what to do
and where to go. In November we
will literally live in the bus. We have
nine trips planned.
Next week the Baylor-Garland
seminar "Oh, My Aching Joints" will
be Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. Be sure
to sign up for this event. They bring
lunches and we don't want you to be
left out.
Next Friday. Oct. 28, we will be
giving flu vaccines beginning at 9
a.m. until we have given them all
away. Please sign up now so we can
have order in giving them.
The Halloween party is Monday
the 31 st, do hope you have your cos-
tume ready and plan on attending.
We have so much fun.
Next month we are going to
Greenville, to visit "Mary of Puddin'
Hill" where they bake the holidi^^
fruit cakes and make candy. Th^^
needlework of James Lee Cook is on
our agenda to see his showing. We
will shop at Garden Ridge, go to
Granbury, Lone Star Race Track,
Oklahoma casino, shop downtown
Wylie, and visit the Palm Court Tea
Room. Plan now to sign up and don't
miss out on all these activities. Those
dust bunnies will wait on you, the
dishes will dry, and the clothes will
pile up, so you can have something to
do on the weekends.
You can find us at 3815 Sachse
Rd., by the Library and Police
Station. Until next lime, I'll keep Ihe
door open.
