Q) I saw a notice on the bul-
letin board at work that some
people are having too much tax
withheld from their paychecks.
How can 1 find out if I am one
of them?
A) Single employees earn-
ing up to $25,000 a year and
married employees, whose
spouses are not employed, with
earnings up to $31,000 gen-
erally can expect to have their
full tax withheld. If you fall
into either of these categories
and are only employed on one
job, you should claim all the
withholding allowances to
which you are entitled to avoid
having too much withheld.
More information is available
local Internal Revenue Service
office.
(J) I have two jobs. One of
my employers has withheld
$lfi8 in social security tax from
my paycheck—the maximum re-
quired to he paid. Hut my
second employer continues to
withhold the social security
tax. Can I get this money back?
A) Yes. You will be able to
take the entire amount of the
social security tax in excess of
$468 as a credit against your
1972 income tax.
Q) I won $250 in an essay j
contest, but refused the prize.
Am I still taxed on the money?
— iUUir illiunuauuil lis |
E from your employer or your] A) No. Although ordinalily
prizes arc taxable to the recip-
ient, you are not taxed if you
refuse to accept tha prize.
Q) My mother lives in her
own home and has no income
other than social security bene-
fits. I am the only person con-
tributing to her support. May
I claim her as a dependent?
A) Because your mother
lives in her own home, she has
contributed the total fair
rental value of her home to-
ward her own support. Assum-
ing your mother used her so-
cial security benefits for her
own support, in order for you
to claim her as a dependent,
your contributions to her sup-
port must exceed the total of
these items.
For more information on the
dependency rules, see IRS Pub-
lication 501, "Your Exemp-
tions and Exemption for De-
pendents." It's available free
by writing your Internal Rev-
enue district office.

the "Yield" sign means^J
slow down at the intersec-
tion and be prepared to
stop if necessary , as
cross traffic has the right
of way.
YELLOW
LINE
A yellow stripe on your
side of the center line
means "No Passing. . .
limited Vision Area
Ahead". In some states
this no passing line is
painted white, so know
your own local re-
gulations. Pay particular
attention to these very
important markings for
many times you won't see
the reason for the no pas-
sing zone until it's too
late to do anything about
it, and this is particularly
true on the older roads.
White on yellow, watch
for these lines and BL
CAREFUL.
DIAMOND...WARNING
X7
Yellow, diamond shaped,
with black letters or fig-
ured, gives motorist ad-
vance warning on road
conditions. Means "cau-
tion" to the motorists and
generally calls for a
reduction in speed .
Curves , stop ahead,
school crossing, hills ,
bumps, dips, clearance ,
and more, all use diamond
shapes.
Sign language is still a
means of communication.
L{ach shape of a traffic
sign warns you oi some-
thing specilic. Instant
recognition of the various
shapes can save you
precious seconds at the
very least, and perhaps
might save your life.
