of which was claimed by CapL W. G.
Waters has become the undisputed
property of the United State.
"Waters laid claim to the island be-
cause it was not mentioned In the ces-
sion treatries of Spain and Mexico or

recognizing the Federal sovereignty
Waters was given a lease of live years
and after that period the government
will lease it to the highest bidder.
The island continues to Justify Its
freakish reputation. Some years ago
an earthquake shook one end loose j

ing up the canyons killing the grass
and driving the sheep to the leeward
side of the island. During the Febru-
ary drouth winds took the sands away
as mvsteriously as they came clean-

Grady who weighs more than 200
pounds In trying to escape from the
building in which she roomed after
it bad taken fire last night became
fast in a window Tho woman's
screams attracted the first fire com
pany that arrived and tho men were
given a hard task before they suc
ceeded in carrying her down a ladder
from the second floor.
The blaze had started In Miss
Grady's room from a gas stove and
she spent several minutes trying to
beat it out before giving an. alarm.
Her escape by a stairway was cut off-
when she attempted to leave the
building in this way and she turned
to the window.
The firemen chopped a sash away
before she could b released.
