RA BLUFF OX ENGINEER
BUGGY BLOCKS RAILROAD.
Brownwood has been hearing com-
plaints for years about railroads block-
ing traffic along the streets by stand-
ing trains across the crossings for
. many minutes but not until yesterday
has there been a record of a buggy
blocking railroad traffic. Such a thing
happened at the Santa Fe yesterday
morning when Drew Taylor was stop-
ped there waiting for a freight to
move from over the crossing. HIf
buggy was standing across the main-
line and a switch e.ngine came shriek-
ing down the track in a mad rush
' for the round house but Taylor refus
ed to budge. The horse he was driv-
ing stood with deaf ears to the shrieks
of the whistle and sputtering steam.
The engine cane on right up to the
"buggy but Taylor wouldn't budge. His
way was blocked by a freight train
and-he claimed equal rights with the
railroad. The engineer saw he was
up against the real thing and stopped
his engine not five feet away from
Taylor's buggy. He undertook to ar-
gue Taylor into moving but was told
no that the people had been long suf-
fering in the matter of blocking cross-
ings and that time about was fair play.
The two argued the question for sev-
eral minutes but Taylor never budged
an inch until the freight opened a way
for' him to proceed on his way to
town.
There were quite a number of ve-
hicles gathered at the crossing and
theycheered lustily when Taylor made
his bluff stick.

A MAMMOTH FIELD.
remaps the largest grain field in
middle west Texas is located in Jones
county on what has been known for
the past twenty-years as the T Dla
mond ranch so known by the .brand
given by the owners. Some time ago
the owners of the land K. K. Leggett'
president of the A. and M. college
board state.-senator W. J. Bryant and
Sam Young stockman all of Abilene
decided that the day of the profitable
raising of the steer had passed for
ever accordingly tney set about con
verting the ranch Into farms. The plan
pursued by them was unique but
straight to the point and businesslike.
They imported a monster traction en-
gine to which they attached a string
of fourteen plows under the experlenc- j
ed management of Mr. Griffin from Bell
county and began to demonstrate the
economy of farming on a large scale.
For months the big engine has been
turning up the soil and following the
turning with an enormous harrow
leaving the new ground In a thorough
ly pulverized state. Experienced
farmers say that the work of the en-
gine is superior to any man and mule
work they have ever seen. Today one
can look out over 4000 acres of grain
in one field where months ago there
were a few cattle grazing on the long
curly mesquite grass. The owners
state that this work will continue until
practically all of this land is turned
into a "field. There are now three of
these traction engines owned and used
by farmers for plowing in the great
level region. Stockman and Farmer.
Of course I believe that the world
is growing better. As man develops
in education culture realizing mor
fully day by day that upon Individual
happiness rests national -securltv he
becomes more tolerant and more so-
Lcitfous for hi? fellow man who Is
traveling along with him to the mys
tery called death. I am sure that the
great human heart is purer today than
it was a century ago and the Divine
Spark is being gradually fanned into
a fiame and eventually the warmth
will become so diffused that we will
find all the time we need to help those
who are less fortunate than ourselves;
those who are struggling along under
the heavy load of heredity and envl-
ronment.-:-Cleburne Enterprise.

SIDEWALK
Those contemplating the building of a cement sidewalk will
do well to see me before letting the contract. During the
past year E have done a great deal of this kind of work in
Brownwood and have yet to hear the first complaint. I
have recently added a cement mixer to my facilities which
enables me to do even better work than I did by the old
hand process. It also enables me to do the work faster.
I can if given the opportunity very soon convince you of the
superiorty of my work. My prices are very low.
