A Curious Superstition.
There is a virions Miperstition com-
mon to Shetlauders and Cingalese.
How islanders so wide apart some
15000 miles managed to adopt each
other's view one does not know but
here is the fact. The rice cultivators
of Ceylon :md the lishennen of Shet-
land resemble each other in one or two
rather remarkable points. They re-
frain from speaking of the implements
of their calling by their names. They
call them something else by names
known only to themselves. The reason
is that if the evil spirit were to think
that they were shaking of spades and
rakes or of nets and hooks he would
be tempted to damage them or even
to apiiropriate them. The train of
thought is the -sat?' r Win rates:
"There Is an evil spjr;; jivays u the
lookout for opportunity of dojv utis-
ciiiof. He eve:i hears hat w? --ay. If
we let liitu understand that ie are
talking about nur implements and
tools we shall direct his attention to
them and shall suggest to him a way
of doing an injury. Therefore we will
agree to call a boat or a spade by some
fancy name known- only to ourselves."
Her Limitations.
"These pianos look too cheap." said
the young woman her brows contract-
ing slightly. "Show me some of the
best you've got."
"Yes. ma'am." said the salesman.
"May I ask how high you care to go'r"
"Me? Oh. 1 only go to 0. but I want
one with all the octaves just the
name." Chlcac i Tribune.
Let Him Try.
"I fear no foe in shining armor."
sang the man at a concert.
"Don't you. old chap?" grumbled the
bachelor in the front row. "Then you
try to open a sardine box with a pocket-
knife." One Secret.
Lawyer I must know the whole
truth before 1 can successfully defend
you. Have you told me everything?
Prisoner Except where I hid the mon-
ev. I want that for myself.
He Knew..
''I suppose you know why yon are
here?" asked the .in dire severely.
"Yes. sir." answered the prisoner.

The Andromeda Nebula.
One of the mot astonishing objects
In the heavens especially when photo-graph'-d'
is the irrent. nebula in the
constellation Andromeda which is vis.
Ible as a misty -peck to the nakel eye.
It has long puzzled astronomers be-
cause while Its structure a series of
vast rings surrounding a central mass
-suggests a gaseous constitution. Its
spectrum is continuous resembling
that of the sun. "It has been suggested
that it may be i-omposed of stars con-

Shooting Stars.
When !i shooting -t.-i t breaks into
flame in our atmosphere the residuum
of the combustion remains in the air
and can be found in what is known as
atmospheric dust. The virgin snow of
the polar regions was often seen to be
spotted with traces of 'dust which-contained
particles of iron. Like. particles
are found on church "towers" and else-
where. Among the minute bodies that
dance in the sun's rays. there are cer-
tainly parfieles of shooting stars.
