Poor Old Dublin!
Occasionally you hear some one ex-
pressing wonderment that Dublin is
-not growing more rapidly but if he
would consider the situation for a mo-
ment there would be no occasion for
surprise. With no active business or-
ganization and no effort whatever be-
ing made to stimulate busines secure
new enterprises and advertise the
town and county in such a maner that
homeseekers would be induced to lo-
cate here how can we expect the town
to more than hold its own when all
around us other sections are making
such a mighty pull to advance their
Interests? People who live here are
not inclined to invite their friends and
relatives to come to Dublin while the
'citizens are making absolutely no ef-
fort to push the town to the front
and prospectors looking for a new lo-
cation very seldom stop at a place
which appears to have reached its
growth. Only the other day we heard
a citizen remark that he was in cor-
respondence with a number of parties
in his old home state who were anx-
ious to come to Texas but he could
not conscientiously advise them to
come to Dublin. It is high time that
we get busy. Dublin is a good town.
not so much on account of any seriou
well-defined efforts on the part of the
citizens to promote its interests as a
naturally advantageous situation
which has carried it on almost of its
own volition. The time has no
come however wheniwe must direct
more attention to the city's advance
ment if we desire a continuation of
Its growth or even hope to see it
hold its own. Dublin Telephone.

YOUNG PEOPLE CAUSE
DAMAGE TO CRUSHING PLANT.
Maury Hall proprietor of the Rock
Crushing Plant is looking for the par-
ties who went to his plant Sunday
afternoon and destroyed nearly a hun-
dred dollars' worth of property. It is
said that three couples of young folks
were at the plant and found recrea-
tion in running- the cars down the
Mountain side.
A car loaded with rock was turned
loose at the top of the hill and sied
down to the crusher tearing up the
track breaking the trolley and doing
much damage. Hr. Hall thinks he
has a pretty good idea who did the
damage and says tljey will .surely
have to pay for alltfreakage.
Many crowds ofyoung people have
visited the crushing plant on Sunday
but this is l&etlrst time that any
big damagehas been done.

Spanish Nicknames.
One of the. peculiar ways in which
Spnnlsh differs from English is in the
names the language gives to all peo-
ple with a certain Infirmity or peculiar-
ity. A blind man Is referred to as el
ciego a man with but one eye is n
tuerto a pug nosed man Is chato one
who is cross eyed Is a bisojo a cojo is
a lame man and a inanco has but one
arm. If he Is humpbacked he Is a
Jorobado; If baldheaded a calvo and
if Ills hair Is very short he Is a pelon.
The feminine titles for the same classes
are the same with the exception that
they end In "a" where the masculine
terminate with o." These short names
nre used most commonly. In fact they
nre applied as nicknames in many
cases and especially among the lower
classes persons are addressed or re-
ferred to only by these names.
A Wedding Present.

name something she replied:

THE PARACHUTE.
fLeonardo da Vinci Was the First One
to Suggest It
Credible accounts exist of an English
Benedictine monk Oliver of Malmes- f
bury In the eleventh century having
tried to fly by precipitating himself
from the height of a tower with the
assistance of wings attached to his
arms and his feet It Is said that hav-
I lnrr trnni ntoni? n little vnv he fell and
O o ------ - - r
broke his legs. Die attributed his accl-
dent to failure to provide his appara-
tus with a tail which would have help-
ed preserve his equilibrium and made
his descent a gentler one.
In the sixteenth century Leonardo da
Vinci first demonstrated that a bird
which Is heavier than the air sustains
itself advances in the air "by render
lng the fluid denser where it passes
than where it does not pass." In order
to fly it has to fix Its point of support
on the air. Its wings In the descending-
stroke exert a pressure from above
down the reaction of which from be-
low up forces the center of gravity of
its body to ascend at each Instant to
the height at which the bird wishes to
maintain it Some sketches which have
come down to us prove that Leonardo
occupied himself like Oliver of Malmes-
bury with giving man the power to fly
by the assistance of wings suitably
fixed to the body.
We owe to Leonardo ntao'th" Inven-
tion of the pawhete. w'-J-h be dc-
scribed in the tllowta:: r -ts: "If .1
man had a pavilion earn side of which
was fifteen braces wide and twelve f
braces high he might cast himself from
any height whatever without fear of
danger." It may be said too. of Leo-
nardo da Vinci that he was the first to
suggest the Idea of the screw propeller.
Papua Island.
Papua Island was so named by the
Malays and the word means "frizzled'
In reference to the hair of the Inhabit-
ants. It is generally supposed that
Papua or New Guinea was originally
part of the mainland of Australia. It
was discovered by the Portuguese in
1520 though it was probably sighted
by A: Dabreu during his voyage fifteen
years earlier. The Australian govern-
ment realizing the danger that would
arise if an enemy seized land so near
their coasts frequently urged England
to annex the eastern portion of the
island and after two or three unau-
thorized annexations a British protec-
torate was established there in 1SS4-
Clipplng Their Wings.
The costume of the Pu Yuan Pen-Jen
women in the Shan states Is very strik-
ing consisting of a cloth hood an open
Jacket and a pair of short white trou-
sers reaching barely to the knee. But
the most Important though the least
noticeable part of their costume is their
colored cloth gaiters. These the women
nre oblised to wear ns without them
It is believed they would be able to fly
away leavihg their husbands and
sweethearts sorrowful.
