"That fool lawyer" at Austin has won
another case in the United States Su-
preme court. The case involved a
quarantine site at GalVeston. The
Federal Government attempted to tak3
possession of the site and in the. lower
courts were successful but when the
case reached the United States Su-
preme court Mr. Davidson of Texas
won. Wonder if the United States Su-
preme court judges are all fools too.
Davidson is said to be the only attor-
ney general who ever won ten con-
secutive ceases before the Supreme
court aud he didn't stop at ten.
" In today's issue of the Bulletin ap-
pears excerpts taken from the write-
up of the Brownwood Country which
appeared in the Dallas News Of last
Friday. The News sent a special staff
writer to Brownwood and the merits
and advantages of this section were
well detailed in the article. The News
solicited no advertising on account of
the feature and expects no monetary
return except the returns "that will
come to all Texas enterprises as a re-
sult of developing aud settling th2
state. The policy of such a newspap-
er is a broad one like the railroad
that spends vast sums of money in ad-
vertising and transporting settlers to
a new country expecting no immediate
results but foreseeing that such work
will in future bring .its reward. The
write-up in the News will be repub-
published in many quarters and rail-
roads will use it in their advertising
booklets and thousand of prospectors
will gain information that would
otherwise have been unavailable and
Texas and the Brownwood country es-
pecially will benefit But the immi-
gratfon of thousands to this state
places just that many more readers of
newspapers within the trade territory
of the News and therein comes the
benefit. It is a broad and far-reach-
ing policy that prompts a newspaper

The speech of George N. Aldredge
before the Conference of Agricultural
and Commercial Interests at Fot
Worth Friday was little short off an
insult to farmers if not to all people
of Texas Nearly every section the
state had representatives present and
Mr. Aldredge upon being chosen chair
man of the meeting delivered a speech
in which he said that the farmers were

order to become Governor a man must
pander to the prejudices of the farm-
ers and Intimated that the farming
class as a whole was so ignorant that
their prejudices were easily played iip-
on for the accomplishment of any pur-
pose desired by a politician.
I'art o.f the disgraceful speech which
was applauded was as follows:
"Now gentlemen we come to the
farmer. The farmer has an ally in
town the day laborer. But we will
discuss the farmer. He is the bulk of
the trouble. The farmer is probably
the most honest citizen we have not
because 'he Is naturally more honest
than the town man but lie has fewer
temptations and therefore I consider
him more honest but the most preju-
diced human being on the face of the
earth is the farmer in this country. He
is as full of prejudice as an egg Is of
meat. The farmer's idea is that the
man In town Is not making ati honest
living. They do not believe that any
man makes an hbnest living unless the
sun is shining on'him while he Is at it;
that Ib their test .
f
"A man cannot even be elected gov-
ernor of this state without pandering
to that same prejudice of the farmer.
(Applause.) If I had my way I would
not let a man who was a candidate
for office make a speech more than
tyo miles from town because the busi-
ness men could go out and hear hltn
and he dare not abuse them while
they were present. If you let theni go
any further than that away put In the
school house and have ant audience

The Commercial clubs of Texas are
supposed to be behind the' movement
that called this meeting at Fort Worth
but the Bulletin is' loath to believe tlrt
the Commercial clubs endorse the sen-
thrfnt expressed by this man. The
Brownwood Fifty Thousand Club se-
lected two representatives John G.
Lee and J. D. Caldwell to represent the
Commercial anu Agricultural interests
of this section and It Is safe to guess
