CONQUERORS CONQUERED.
The
Fate of Alexander Hannibal
Caesar and Napoleon.
It is a remarkable and instructive
fact that the careers of four of the most
renowned characters that ever lived
closed with violent or mournful deaths.
Alexander after looking down from
the dizzy heights' of his ambition upon
a conquered world and weeping that
there were no more to conquer died
of intoxication in a scene of debauch
v as some suppose by poison mingled
ra his wine.
Hannibal whose name carried terror
to the heart of Rome itself after hav-
ing crossed the Alps and put to flight
the armies of the mistress of the world.
was driven from his country and died
at last of poison administered by his
own bands- In a foreign land unlii-

A bachelor rector of a western
church was alone lu his study when
his housekeeper brouglit him the card
of one of his parishioners a spinster
of 'means and charm.
When the lady was seated on the op-
posite side of his study table the rector
looked at her inquiringly expecting to
hear something roncernlug parish
work. In which she was active. To bis
surprise an embarrassed silence eu
sued during which he vainly sought
for something to say.
"Dr. Blank." began the lady at
last in faltering tones "do you ihlufc-
cau you fancy conditions under which
a -a woman is justified in proposing?"
"Why. ye." said the rector after
some deliberation.
"Thou nrt the man!" said the lady
resolutely.
She was right.

IT CLEANS THE SHIPS.
Sailing Through a Volcano Crater In
the Aegean 8a.
In the Aegean sen a vessel may sail
into the top of a crater and. though it
is hard to find anchornge there yet a
mere sail through is appreciated great-
ly by captains because it cleanses the
bottom of the ships from marine
growth.
More than 2000 years ago the isle of
Santorln was split in half by an earth-
quake with the result that what was
once the crater of a volcano is now a
crescent shaped harbor. Two glisten-
ing white towns of Thcra and St
Nicholas are perched on the summit of
the steep cliffs whose dark and dismal
hue Is similar to that of the top of Ve-
suvius. Standing out against the sky
are large numbers of windmills with
many sails arranged In a perfect cir-
cle. These are evidently employed for
crushing the olives which along with
the terraced vines are the staple prod-
uct of the Island. The. Santorln wine Is
of excellent quality and Is highly ap-
preciated In the Levant.
Between the mnln Island on the east
and the smaller. Theresla. on the west
are the three Bmall Kaumene Islands
all of which have come into existence
since the original earthquake while the
largest of the three was "born from
the sea" less than 200 years ago show-
ing that the center of the old volcano
has still a certain amount of activity.
The water In the harbor Into which
tle sulphurous streams from this vol-
canic Island rain has n peculiar prop-
erty which completely cleans off
growths of every kind from the bottom
of any ship.

' AN ACCURATE CLOCK.
The Timepiece in the Okeervatary f
Columbia University.
In the observatory of ColmmWa
verslty is one of the most accurate
clocks In the world. It has run for
several months with a mean error ef
only fifteen-thousandths of a secc4
and a maximum error of thlrty-thoa-aandths
of a second per day. That
. means that it does not vary more thaa
half a second a month or six second
a year.
Compare this with the first pocket
timepiece the "animated egg of N-
rembergi" which required winding
twice a day and varied an boor and a
half in the same time! Compare it
with some of the highest priced
watches manufactured today whka
often vary more than ten seconds a
week and you will have some Idea of
the refinements in the science of meas-
jnrlng time. Yet even this accuracy
I surpassed by some famous timepieces.
If the trade magazines nre to be be-
lieved. There have been accounts ia
them of clocks or watches that hare
varied less than a second in periods as
long as ten years.
t The clock at the University or Co-
lumbia is an astronomical clock. It la
' surrounded by a glass case In which a
partial vacuum Ib maintained and U
order that the ense may not be opeaed
r disturbed the winding Is done auto-
matically by electricity The clock la
set up in a room especially constructed
to keep it free from Jar or vibratloa.
The temperature and barometric con-
ditions nre maintained practically con-
stant and every possible precaution is
taken to minimize the errors of taa
running mate. New York WorM.!( -
