Judge W. C. Dowdy
Judge Dowdy
Announces For
Re-Election
Judge W. C. Dowdy of McKin-
ney has announced his candidacy
for re-election to the office of
the 59th District Court.
A descendant of pioneer Collin
County families, and a long time
resident of McKinney, Judge
Dowdy has been elected to the
judgeship for five consecutive I
terms without opposition, and I
has voiced his appreciation to
the lawyers and people of Col-
lin and Grayson counties for this
continued expression OS confi-
dence.
He was educated in the Collin
rural and McKinney public
j schools, and is a 1916 graduate
I of the law School of the Univer-
sity of Texas. He was active at
the university, president of his
| middle law class, and a leader
in his fraternity of Kappa Sig-
j ma.
Upon graduation he returned
to McKinney and engaged in the
general practice of law. After
taking time out for service with
the A.E.F. in France, he re-
sumed his law practice for sev-
eral years before becoming as-
sistant county attorney. He then
served two terms as county at-
torney, and again engaged in the
general practice of law until he
was appointed District Judge,
While in the A.E.F. he took
part in the Meuse - Argonne of-
fensive in France, and was in
the army ofoccupation in Ger-
many. He then studied law at
the Inns of Court in London, re-
turned to America, and was hon-
orably discharged on August 1,
1919.
Judge Dowdy has always been
active in church and civic af-
fairs. He is an elder of Trinity
United Presbyterian Church, and
served as clerk of the session for
many years. He enjoys a record
of more than 41 years perfect
attendance at his Sunday School.
He has served as president of
Lions Club; a past commander
of the Jimmy Geigas post Ameri-
can Legion, a member of the V.
F.W., and is active in serveral
lodges and fraternities.
. He has served as president of
the Collin County Bar Associa-
tion, district director of the Tex-
tis State Bar; is a member of the
American Bar Association, Tex-
as State Bar and the Judicial
Conference of Texas.
Judge Dowdy's many friends
say he has an excellent record
as a judge, as well qualified to
continue in office, is fair, compe-

tent, courteous and diligent in
his work.
In making his announcement,
Judge Dowdy stated:
"I am happily married to the
former Emily Gilson, an ex-
school teacher, and we have
three children, a lawyer son, a
doctor son and a lovely daugh-
ter.
"When I became judge of the
59th district court, I determined
to give my undivided attention
to the judicial business of his
area. As a consequence, I have
tried many civil and criminal
cases in the two counties, and
many other counties in Texas.
Some have been appealed to the
higher courts and most of them
have been affirmed. I am sure
Texas. Several of the rulings I
I enjoy a reputation as an able,
cautious and learned trial judge
with all the appellate judges of
have made are still being quoted
by the higher courts and have
caused new and better law to
be made. This is gratifying to
the lawyers and judges alike.
"1 have tried to work pleasant-
ly and constructively with the
lawyers, jurors, grandjurors.and
jury commissioners in my two
counties, and with my fellow
judges in Grayson County. I
treasure the many friendships 1
have made through these asso-
ciations.
"I have endeavored to be a
judge's judge as well as a peo-
ple's judge. I am an active mem-
ber of the Texas Judicial Sec-
tion of the State Bar, and now
enjoy seniority in this group.
1 have spoken on a number of
legal subjects at the judges' meet-
ings, including court charges,
special issues, forms for jury
charges in compensation cases,
and have presented papers on
other legal subjects. For two
years 1 worked as chairman of
a committee preparing Canons
of Judicial Ethics which were
unanimously adopted by the Tex-
as judges last fall, (Texas Bar
Journal, Feb., 1964.) Also I have
been a member of the Judges'
committee for revising the Code
of Criminal Procedure and Penal
Code of Texas. Many of our sug-
gestions have already been
adopted. For our own court I
have prepared printed forms for
charges in damage and compen-
sation cases, and jury instruc-
tions thus saving many vaulable
hours of court time.
"1 sincerely hope that you, the
voters of Collin and Grayson
counties, will honor me with an-
other term as your district judge
1 only ask that you consider my
record. If you re-elect me, I
shall continue to be fair, courte-
ous and diligent, upholding the
dignity of the court. 1 have faith
in you and believe that the voters
of Collin and Grayson Counties
will cast their ballots for the
man they honestly believe is
best qualified for the office."
