Have a Hobby to Relax and Enjoy
Everyone can afford to enjoy
a hobby. In fact, few people oan
afford not to . . . especially in
America today.
Free time presents a challenge.
Doctors warn against too much
inactivity which can produce
boredom. You may enjoy being
lazy now and then . .. but exces-
sive boredom makes many peo-
ple cranky, depressed, even phy-
sically ill.
How can you invest your lei-
sure hours?
Why not put them to work to
make your life happier, more
complete? You can find that kind
of satisfaction in a hobby.
As an emotional safety valve
... a tension-reliever ... a plea-
sure always ready to be savored
... hobbies are unbeatable.
Hobbies are practically gilt-
edged insurance that you will
win friends and influence people!
When you have a hobby, you
become a specialist of a sort . . .
you have something new to talk
about . . . something that will
interest others.
According to the Hobby In-
dustry Association, whether you
enjoy the rugged outdoors or the
snug comforts of home and fire-
side, there's a hobby for you. It
doesn't take much equipment or
know-how to get started.
Hobbies come in just four
varieties: You can decide you
want to do something, make
something, learn something or
collect something. In each case,
you may have a hobby to enjoy
in blissful solitude or one which
calls for the companionship of
like-minded — and therefore,
highly desirable — people!
How many actual hobbies are
there to choose from? Almost as
many as there are people to en-
joy them.
So, anywhere your fancy takes
you ... go there the hobby way.
By allotting some of your leisure
time to constructive activities,
you will be a happier and more
interesting person to know.

BIBLE CREDIT CLASSES
FOR GARLAND STUDENTS
Garland students in grades nine through
twelve may receive one quarter unit
toward high school graduation by taking
Bible credit classes conducted by area
churches or religious organizations
according to Ann Jensen, language arts
consultant for the Garland Independent
School District.
Two elective courses, one on the Old
Testament and one on the New Testament,
will be offered. "The Bible is taught for its
literary, historical and moral values on a
non-denominational basis," Mrs. Jensen
stressed. "The accreditation of the Texas
Education Agency states that the Bible
courses must be nonsectarian," she added.
The courses are taught by church
personnel who must have 60 hours of
college work. To receive credit for the
course, a student must successfully
complete a final examination given under
the auspices of the Board of Education on
the first Monday of May.
Text for the course is the Bible with
supplementary material available from
the Auditor's office of the Dallas
Independent School District. Study guides
for both the Old Testament and New
Testament courses are each $1 plus tax,
plus postage. Churches must send
enrollment lists to Mrs. Jensen by
November 1.
"Any student needing information about
these courses should contact me
immediately because several churches are
organizing classes now," Mrs. Jensen
concluded. She may be reached at the
School Administration Building, 494-3466,
extension 282.
How did frankfurters get to be called
"hot dogs"? Some credit Tad Dorgan,
the great comic strip artist whose char-
acters were franks with dog-like features,
legs and tail. They talked, never barked
Coney Island called them Red Hots, and
claimed credit by adding the roll, mus-
tard, and the original 5C price.
