LAKE LAVON REPORT
Lavon's current elevation is 485.33,
still nearly seven feet low, and we are
hoping spring rains will bring us up to our
new elevation of 492. All boat ramps are
still usable.
The camper service areas in Lavonia
and Little Ridge Parks were opened for
the summer season on April 3. All four
areas including East Fork and Collin
Parks, are in full operation. The fee for
using these areas is $3.50 per day for
complete hook-ups. If the past two
weekends of spring like weather are an
indication of what is to come, this will
be a very busy summer at the lake.
Sand bass are schooling and large
catches in the 2 to 3 pound range have
been reported. Several hybrid stripers
have been reported in the 3 to 4 pound
range. Crappie are biting up the creeks,
but have not moved into the shallow
water of the lake to spawn. Water
temperature near the dam on March 31
was 53 degrees Fahrenheit and was about
the same down to 33 feet. Channel cat
are beginning to bite, but no reports
of any big catches as yet. If you think
you have caught a big hybrid striper,
we would be glad to identify it if you
bring it by the Project C.'fice located at
the west end of the dam.
Boat traffic on Lake Lavon has
increased tremendously in the past
years. Please be careful while partici-
pating in water sports. Be sure your boat
and motor are in good condition and
that all safety precautions are heeded.
Obey al! rules and regulations pertaining
to use of the Lake and your visit will
be enjoyable.
We have received many inquiries in
the past few weeks concerning use of
Brockdale Park. Brockdale was designed
for use by the handicapped who are
unable to fish and enjoy the picnic
facilities of other parks around Lavon.
It has not been opened due to lack of
visitation at the Caddo Park handicap
area on Highway 380 between Princeton
and Farmersville. The high cost of
stocking the ponds with channel catfish
and maintaining a gate attendant at the
Park to deter vandalism has not
warranted opening Brockdale. In order
to utilize the area, we are allowing non-
profit organizations requiring specialized
facilities to use the area on a reservation
basis. For more details please call the
Project Office at 442-5711.

Special Olympics
Approximately 500 mentally retarded
athletes from Dallas and the surrounding
areas participated in the District 10 Track
and Field Special Olympics recently in
Grand Prairie.
Activities included the lighting of the
Olympic torch and parade of athletics.
Gene Stalling, Dallas Cowboy coach, led
the group in the reciting of the Special
Olympics oath: Let me win. But if I
cannon win, let me be brave in the
attempt.
The goal of the Special Olympics is to
provide mentally retarded citizens the
opportunity to participate in sports
regardless of handicap. Such activities
as track and field, swimming, bowling
and basketball are held each year. A
special wheelchair division is conducted
in each activity.
The Special Olympics program was
founded in 1968 by the Joseph P.
Kennedy, Jr. Foundation.
Some 100 of the athletes who parti-
cipated in the District 10 meet will
travel to Austin May 24—26 for the
Texas Special Olympics State Track and
Field meet.
