recommends only emergency
radiographs for pregnant
women. Should they be
necessary, several factors
help assure x-ray safety. The
exposure time is brief, the
x-ray beam is extremely
narrow and is not normally
pointed toward the abdomen.
In fact, the abdomen and
fetus should be protected by
a lead apron.

BY DR. CHARLES CARTER, D.D.S.
There is no truth to the old
saying that a woman must
lose a tooth for each
pregnancy. If tooth loss has
been associated with
pregnancy, probably it is
because women tend to
neglect their teeth at that
time and during the busy
months after the baby is born.
Contrary to popular belief,
the developing fetus does not
draw calcium from the
mother's teeth. If a woman
eats a balanced diet and
practices good oral hygiene,
pregnancy should not bring on
dental troubles.
There is one problem
common to pregnant women:
pregnancy gingivitis, a
puffiness or bleeding of the
gums caused by the irritating
effects of plaque. It may
occur more frequently during
pregnancy because hormonal
changes make the tissue
more sensitive. A professional
cleaning program can help
clear up the condition, and
strict brushing and flossing
should prevent recurrences.
There is little reason to
avoid dental treatment during
pregnancy. Most dental
treatment can be completed
without risk to mother or
baby. The fourth through
sixth months seem to be the
best because the pregnant
patient is usually past the
nauseous state.

One tax shelter that surviv
ed tax reform is the retire-
ment plan.
There are several. Self-em-
ployed people should consider
a Keogh plan that allows a
deduction for contributions of
up to 20 percent of self- em-
ployment income, with a
$30,000 maximum. Any self-
employment income qualifies,
even from a part-time busi-
ness or free-lance work.
If you are an employee, you
should find out if your com-
pany has a 401 (k) plan, and
consider making a tax-de-
ductible contribution of up to
$7,000 to the plan.
The IRA has certainly been
one of the best shelters avail-
able to the working taxpayer.
If your contributions remain
deductible under the new law,
by all means continue making
them. The government is pay-
ing for a share of your
contribution via the tax sav-
ings, and your earnings accu-
mulate tax-free until retire-
ment.
If you are among the five-
and-a-half million taxpayers
who have lost tax deduct-
ibility for your IRA contribu-
tions, you will have to decide
what to do. Do a comparison
of alternative investments
with the IRA to see where the
after-tax return is greater.

To determine the amount of
your IRA deduction if you fall
into the partially deductible
category, do this simple cal-
culation. Subtract your esti-
mated adjusted gross income
from $35,000 if you
single, or from $50,000 if
are filing joint as married.
Multiply that number by 20
percent. The result is the
deductible portion of your IRA
contribution.
With the elimination of the
capital gains deduction and
the provision in the new law
allowing IRA dollars to be
invested in certain gold and
silver coins, you will also want
to reconsider how you invest
your IRA dollars.
We now have our client tax
arrangers in our office avail-
able if you are interested in

WHS Student
Visits Mexico
Jill Nissen, Wylie High
School senior and Pan
American Student Forum
member, spent Thanksgiving
holidays in Mexico City,
Cuernavaca and surrounding
areas as part of an exchange
program.
Sponsors were the Good
Neighbor Commission of
Texas and the publishers of
Economia Nacionai, a
monthly magazine in Mexico.
Nissen said: "I discovered a
group of wonderful Mexican
students who were not very
different from American
students."
She said the purpose of the
trip was to promote an
awareness and understanding
of cultural differences in
efforts to strengthen the
friendship between the two
nations.
Nissen visited markets,
museums, the pyramids,
Chapultepec Park, the
National Palace, castles and
cathedrals.
Eileen Moser, Spanish
teacher and local PASF
sponsot, assisted with trip
arrangements. Nissen is the
fourth student of Moser's to
be chosen for the program.
