Sportscaster Scott Murray
Emphasizes Academics
It was Scott Murray live from
Channel 5 at Wylie High
School Wednesday morning
when the Lions Club handed
out sweaters and/or bars to
25 A-students at an all-school
assembly.
Guest speaker Murray
praised the local academic
program and admitted that,
as a father, the most
lportant thing in the world
To him is that his children (an
eleventh grader and a sixth
grader) excel academically.
"Football, baseball, basket-
ball are for four years," the
sportscaster reminded the
students. "Education is for a
lifetime."
He went on to say: "What
you learn in high school no
one can take away from you.
So the more you put in here,
the more successful you'll be
out there."
Murray stressed the
importance of feeling good
about oneself and having a
never-give-up attitude.
"When you look in the
mirror, you may not be the
best-looking or the smartest,
but that person in the mirror
is important. Be proud. You
are unique, special. Don't
ever let anyone tell you
you're not good.
"Be yourself, respect
yourself, believe in yourself -
you are special."
The speaker told the high
school audience: "People
care." Acknowledging the
sweater-winners, he said:
"These people cared enough
to make it happen - for
themselves."
Murray referred briefly to

the recent news events
involving several football
players at Carter High School
(Dallas) who were convicted
of crimes. He called the
events "a tragedy, a waste."
"One thing we've learned
from this is that football is not
more important than aca-
demics," he said.
Lions Club President Vic
Eggemeyer introduced Mur-
ray.
The newscaster's day
Wednesday started at 6 am.
on Radio Station KLIF where
he hosted Norm Hitzges'
show. Besides his radio and
TV appearances, he is also
well known in the area for his
efforts in a number of causes
such as the muscular
dystrophy telethon, and
alcohol and drug abuse
programs.
