Promise of Spring
And Trash Dumps
By Paul Bowling
Spring is when a little guy's
fancy turns to thoughts of
exploring and hunting and
stuff. At least that's the way it
was when I was a boy in
Dodson.
Spring is when we shed our
shoes and began to stay
outside all day long. The
school year ended in May and
we were FREE - to run and
see and smell and listen. We'd
throw rocks, roll old tires, and
build castles in the ever-
present sand.
There were trees to climb
and tree houses to build. Our
imaginations ran rampant. We
became Tarzan and Batman
and all sorts of heroes and
villains. The model airplanes
we had built during winter now
came out to go through the
rigors of play. When the
flimsy planes could no longer
be repaired, they went down
in flames, dropped from a
convenient windmill tower.
Some of us had little money
to spend so we learned to
innovate. That's where you
make things out of what's
laying around. I remember
making a little house to crawl
into using what we called Iron
Weeds. These weeds grew
tall and straight and were
quite strong. I tied them
together with string and it
made a pretty nifty house - if
I do say so myself.
We had a few more things
to work with after we located
a trash dump just outside of
town. (Mothers shudder at the
thought of this.) We found
lots of good stuff in that
dump. Once I discovered a
real ammunition belt from
some past war. I aiso found a
six-note harmonica. I packed
each treasure away in my own
special box where it stayed
until only I took it out for
another round of imaginin'.
Recently saw pictures of
mVen in Mexico who were
f^iging through piles of
refuse in a city dump. But
they were looking for means
to live, not keepsakes. Quite
a difference.
My boyhood dump was tiny
and tidy compared with what
they were wading through. I
wonder what memories they
will have.

Question: "Some say we
are saved by grace alone, if
this be true is there any con-
ditions that apply to our
salvation?"
Answer: We are saved by
grace - Ephesians 2:8 "for by
grace are ye saved through
faith." We are not saved by
grace alone, the verse just
quoted shows that it is
through faith that we have
the grace of God. To save by
grace alone would mean God
would save everyone, since
he is "no respector of per-
sons."
If we could be saved by
grace alone there would be no
conditions of God that we
would be required to meet.
We now must look at some
conditions that must be met
before we are saved. We
must know God's truth - John
8:32.
We must believe the truth,
otherwise we could have no
faith, Romans 10:17. We must
turn from wrong (sin), repent
of our sins, Luke 13:3 and
begin to do God's will. We
must confess Jesus as the
Son of God - Matthew
10:32-33, Acts 8:37. We must
be baptized, be born again -
John 3:3-5, Mark 16:16, Acts
2:38, Romans 6:3-4,
Galations 3:27, I Peter 3:21.
We must worship God accep-
tably - John 4:24.
We must live faithful during
our lives, Revelations 2:10.
Thus the writer James taught,
we cannot be saved by faith
alone either, James 2:24 "Ye
see then how that by works a
man is justified, and not by
faith only."
God's grace is offered to all,
but it is extended to those
that will accept the grace in
obedience to God's will.
