Sachse Fallfest Preparations
Under Way for Sept. 19 Event
Getting in the swing (ouch) of things at Sachse's Salmon Park, scene of the annual Sachse
Fallfest on Sept. 19, are Melinda Andrews, right, and Diana Smith, who head the activities The
big push is on from now until the big event, which attracts thousands to the city.
Sachse's seventh annual
Fallfest Country Fair kicks off
Sept. 19 in Salmon Park.
The Fair is highlighted bv a
way-out "Jupiter Jumper,"
riding lawnmower grand prix,
craftsmen and entertainers,
twins contest, great games
and food, "beautiful children"
pageant, plus fun events,
contests and a raffle.
"Fallfest keeps getting bet-
ter every year. Over 10,000
people attended last year's
activities. For 1992, we are
adding a children's division to
all of our contest areas. This,
along with emphasis on
quality rather than quantity in
the variety of crafts booths,
will make this year's Fallfest
better than ever," said Me-
linda Andrews, Fallfest Asso-
ciation president.
"To benefit both crafts
people and Fallfest visitors,
we're again limiting the
number of craft booths this
year to the first 100 who sign
up," she said. "This worked
very well last year to enhance
the variety of crafts, while
cutting down on duplication of
merchandise."
Fallfest '92 has something
for everyone: the always-
popular riding lawnmower
races, talented stage
performers, arts and crafts,
grandmothers' contest, dunk-
ing booth, best cook contest,
chili cook-off, photo contest
and great merchandise in the
raffle. A new children's
division for the arts and
crafts, food, and photo
contests will highlight the
events this year.
The riding lawnmower
races, which started in 1990,
will attract a lot of attention,
as will the revised layout for
the children's area and stage.
The "Jupiter Jumper", which
is like a bouncy, 'moonwalk-
like' ride, will resurface this
year by popular demand.
"Fallfest is a way to foster
community spirit and partici-
pation. It serves as a format
for Sachse organizations and
others to earn funds through
various projects, with those
funds benefiting the commun-
ity. Last year, Sachse groups
earned more than $8,000.
"Over the past six years, the
Fallfest Association itself has
contributed over $10,000 to
the Sachse Police Depart-
ment, the Sachse Fire De-
partment, City Hall
renovations, and funds toward
construction of a new pavilion
and recreational area in
Salmon Park," Andrews ad-
ded.
The Fallfest Country Fair will
be held from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. in
Salmon Park, just off State
Highway 78 on Williford Road.
Mayor Larry Holden said,
"Fallfest was initiated, in part,
to honor Sachse's German
heritage, since the City was
founded in 1845 by Prussian
immigrant William Sachse.
The German names given the
children's pageant and the
riding lawnmower contest un-
derscore that heritage."
Crafts people from across
the metroplex are making re-
servations for booth space to
sell a variety of hand-crafted
items, such as ceramics,
wood designs, quilts, and
much more.
For crafts booth information,
call 530-3911. For information
on the food and game booths
and various contests, call
414-1713.
"The Grafmahmaschinen
Grand Prix (riding lawnmower
races) are timed, skilled
events," said Terry Clement,
Fallfest board member. "Graf-
mahmaschinen (meaning
grass machine) is the German
word for lawnmower."
The lawnmowers entered
must be actual mowers (the
blade must be able to be
engaged). Competition is for
the best time in completing a
course comprised of obstac-
les which might be found
while mowing a lawn.
Medallions will be awarded in
three classes: under 10 hp,
10-12 hp, and 12-20 hp.
Contact Clement at 530-
2469.
Trophies will be presented in
the Twins or Multiples
Contest for most alike, least
alike, oldest, and other cate-
gories.
Best overall trophies and
first, second, and third place
