The Wylie Lady Pirates are expected to contend for the 1992

players will play key roles. Left to right, back, Jackie Ranly,
April Stires, Tiffany Goodwin, and Kara Ford; front, Missy

Back, left to right, Coach Maria Johnson, Emily Eggemeyer, Jennifer Korn, Beth Stone,

pected to contend for the
District 12-AAA volleyball title
this year.
"Kaufman, Crandall and Wy-
lie ... we should be the top
three teams," Coach Paula
Shaw said.
The Lady Pirates, coming
off one of their worst seasons
-- a cellar-dwelling one, will
be competing in a new district
-- one that should have pretty
good balance.
"There are six teams in the
district. Ferris is just starting
its volleyball program and will
not field a varsity team,"
Shaw said.
When asked about her
team's chances, Shaw flashes
a big grin and replies: "Better
than last year!"
The 1991-92 season is one
the Wylie coach would just as
soon forget, as the Lady Pi-
rates struggled throughout
the year.
One of the reasons for
Shaw's optimism is the return
of six players, including all-
district first-teamer Kara
Ford. Teammate Missy Morris
was an all-district honorable
mention choice.
Other returnees include
Jackie Ranly, April Stires,
Jennv Cooksey, and Amy
Leverett, Tiffany Goodwin,
who missed most of the seas-
on with an injury, is healthy
and should lend a hand. She
and Ford are the only seniors
on the squad.
Team rosters are not set,
but Shaw has about 35 girls
competing for berths on the
freshman, junior varsity, and
varsity teams.
Promising newcomers in-
clude sophomore Shanon El-
liott, who did not play last
year but was an outstanding
freshman basketball player
(competing on the varsity lev-
exemplified her basketball
play comes out on the volley-
ball court, she could be a real
darkhorse.
And then there are freshmen
Valarie Morrow and Rae
Jackman . . . they'll play, and
play a lot. But Shaw hasn't
made up her mind as to which
team -- freshman, JV or
varsity.
"I've seen great improve-
ment in a number of players,
not only those on the varsity,
but some of the younger
girls," Shaw said.
She singled out Sarah
Morrow, Laura Brown, Marcie
Welch, and Cara O'Dell as
being among the most
improved.
The Lady Pirates swing into
action Thursday with a scrim-
mage at Mesquite, and start
the real stuff Friday and
Saturday. All three teams play
at North Mesquite on Friday,
and the varsity competes in a
tournament at Forney on Sat-
urday.
