Six Girls, Four Boys Return
For Wylie Cross Country Track Competition
Brandt Banks, Wylie, and Brena Quaranto, San Antonio, were
named champions in the recent National Roller Skating
Championships in Lincoln, NB. Banks trains at and represents
Thunderbird Roller Rink Skate Club and also attends weekend
training sessions with Quaranto in San Antonio.
Wylie's Brandt Banks Captures
National Skating Championship
Brandt Banks, Wylie, and Brena Quaranto, San Antonio, are
1992 National Roller Skating Champions in the juvenile dance
division.
The Texas team won the title in Lincoln, Nebraska, July
30-Aug. 16.
The U.S. is split into nine regions and the top three
placements from each region are eligible to compete in the
Nationals.
Banks was last year's National Freestyle Champion. He
skated this year's competition with a broken nose, suffered in
a fall the week before.
Banks practices 40 hours per week -- as many as 10 hours on
some days. He was the only Metroplex skater to come away
with a gold medal.
He also made the finals in pairs skating with Piano's Sara
Carlton.
Brandt, a Wylie Middle School student, is the son of Anthony
and Dorri Neel.
"We worked really hard," Quaranto said of the victorv. Brandt
attributed part of the win to superstition, saying, "Last year I
won the junior Ireestyle and my mom wore the same dress to-
night that she wore last year at the Nationals."
What are most Wylie resi-
dents doing at 5:30 a.m.?
Sleeping, of course, like most
people in the central time
zone.
But not the Wylie High
School cross country runners.
They're out practicing for
their first meet, scheduled for
•Saturday, Aug. 29, at Nor-
buck Park in Dallas.
Coach Mary Dudley is out
there with them before the
crack of dawn -- and she's
excited about the team's
prospects.
Wylie girls won district and
regional titles last year, and
Troy Garcia led a surprising
boys contingent -- one that
will have to be reckoned with.
Six girls return from last
year's club, but gone are top
runners Brenna O'Dell and
Mindy Herrera.
Hoping to fill the void are
Sara Winstead and Jami
Sessums, each of whom had
good, solid seasons a year
ago. Rounding out the
returning sextet are Leah and
Tifani Bednarz, Brandi Tipton,
and Jennifer Shipley.
Kara Ford, a senior who is
fresh from a 17th-place finish
in the Junior Olympics hep-
tathlon, is going to make her
first stab at cross country run-
ning, and is joined by two
other seniors who could
provide strong competition --
Sharnece Smith and Kristi
Pruitt.
Other newcomers are Alesha
Gove, Amber Clark,
Samantha Culbertson. and
Patrice Smith.
Garcia paces a seven-mem-
ber boys contingent. The
lanky Garcia is joined by
three other returning seniors
Jonathan Pototschnik,
Steve Cranda!!, and Scott
Williams
Rounding out the boys con-
tingent are freshmen Donny
Long, Cody Parker, and Scott
Tassan.
