If you had told Cowgirl coach
Larry Winchester that his team
would fall into the loser's bracket
early and then win seven games
in one day to win the state 10 and
under softball championship, he
wouldn't have believed it.
But that's exactly what hap-
pened in Longview over the
weekend, with Winchester's team
coming home with the state cham-
pionship and a berth in the nation-
als July 19-21.
"The girls have worked hard this
year, harder than any group of
girls I've ever seen, and I couldn't
be more proud of them," Winches-
ter said after the tournament.
"They've been a great bunch of
girls. They came out and lost a
game and got in the loser's brack-
et and then had to come out and
win seven games in one day. We
also played five games in a row at
the end. I just can't believe the
girls came through and did it.
These girls are just great, that's all
you can say about them."
The Cowgirls began their march
to the championship with a 35-0
win over the Kilgore Phillies, with
the Baytown Bluebonnets the
Cowgirls' next victim by a 12-7
margin. The Cowgirls then lost
their only game of the tounament
to the Pittsburg Braves by a 12-11
margin before coming back to
beat Gladewater 12-7. The Cow-
girls then beat the Mont Belvieu
Red Birds 6-0 before defeating
the Baytown Bluebonnets by a 7-6
margin. The Cowgirls next win
came over the Atlanta Phillies by
a 10-7 score, with the Cowgirls
beating the Pittsburg Braves 27-
13 and 13-9 to win the tourna-
ment.
In the final game, the Cowgirls
scored two runs in the first, seven
in the fifth and four in the sixth,
while the Braves scored six in the
first, two in the third and one in
the fifth.
With the score tied at 9-all, the
Cowgirls scored four times in the
top of the sixth to put the game
away. Howard reached on a fiel-
der's choice before Heard singled.
Shelton followed with an RBI
double, with Kim Allen plating two
more runs with a triple to left.
Lummus then plated the final run
of the inning on an infield single.
The Cowgirls scored twice in
the top of the first to take a 2-0
lead. Shayna Churchman led off
with a single before Devin Howard
doubled. Tonya Heard followed
with a double to score one before
Jessica Shelton flew out to the
shortstop to drive in the second
run of the inning.
Pittsburg came back with six
runs in the bottom of the first to
take a 6-2 lead. Courtney Riley
singled to lead off the inning, with
Jennifer Dorsett following with an
RBI double. Carlenya Veasley
then walked before Tyeisha Jones

inning on a fielder's choice.
The Braves scored twice more
in tht? bottom of the third when Hill
hit an inside-the-park home run
and Christina Brockman reached
on an error and scored on a Kim
Riley double.
Pittsburg added a run in the
fourth to take a 9-2 lead. Veasley
reached on an error and scored
on a Jones single to center.
The Cowgirls came back with
seven runs in the fifth to tie the
game at 9-all. Ashlee Allen led off
with an infield single, with Baraka
Dickerson following with a single
to left. Churchman then singled to
load the bases before Howard
doubled in two runs. Heard fol-
lowed with a double to plate
another run before Shelton drove
in two more runs with a double to
right. Linsey Lummus drove in
another run with a single up the
middle, with Ouida Mosley reach-
ing on a fielder's choice. Ashlee
Allen plated the final run of the in-
ning on a double to right.

Atlanta 11 and 12-year-old
coach Donny Simmons went to
his bullpen at just the right time
against Texarkana South Satur-
day night, and the move paid
proved to be just what the doctor
ordered.
With the bases full of South
baserunners and one out in the
top of the fourth inning, Simmons
brought in his son Donny to pitch,
and the younger Simmons worked
his way out of the jam while allow-
ing only one run to cross the
plate. The inning proved to be the
key to the game, with Atlanta
holding on to win the game 4-3.
Simmons pitched the final 2%
innings for Atlanta, allowing one
run on no hits while striking out six
and walking six.
"All our pitchers had the nerv-
ous jitters like every team will and
we came through and I'm real
proud of them," the eldest Sim-
mons said after the game. "Like I
said, I don't know if it was the big
game with the big crowd and
everything but the main thing was
when we had the bases loaded
we got out of the jam. We didn't
walk a lot of runners across the
plate and that was the whole key
to the game."

Linden loses to Redwater 14-12
The Linden 11 and 12-year-old
All-Stars dropped a 14-12 deci-
sion to Redwater in the opening
round of the sub-district tourna-

first, eight in the third, four in the
fourth and one in the fifth while

sixth.
After the game, Linden coach
Doyle Ellison said his team played
well despite losing.
"I think we played well," Ellison
said. "We just didn't hit very well.
Our pitching was good; they just
got more hits than we did when
they were needed. We hung in
there and played well and we al-
most came back."
After Redwater scored one in
the top of the first to take a 1-0
lead, Linden came back with a run
in the bottom of the inning to tie
the score. Richard Nash singled
and scored on a double by
Domanick Whitfield.
Linden added another run in the
bottom of the second when Bruce
Hitchcock homered to center, giv-
ing Linden a 2-1 lead.
Redwater then exploded for
eight runs in the top of the third to
take a 9-2 lead, with Linden bat-
tling back with two runs in the bot-
tom of the inning to cut Red-
water's lead to 9-4. Carrus Peter-
son singled with two outs before
Hitchcock tripled to plate the first
Linden run of the inning. Brett
Fitts then doubled to score the
second run of the inning.
After Redwater scored four runs
in the top of the fourth to take a
13-4 lead, Linden came back with
four runs in the bottom of the in-
ning to trim Redwater's lead to 13-
8. Nash and Whitfield both singled
to lead off the inning before Matt
Haiiey walked. Rhodney Whatley
then singled in two runs before
