any time to destroy the beauty of
the courthouse and businesses
that has been done by volunteers
of all ages." said Margaret
Lovelace, chairperson of the Lin-
den Christmas Light Committee,
an arm of the local chamber of
commerce.
"This time of year you hear the
messages of "Peace on Earth.
Good Will to All Men', remember
the sick, the shutins and those
who are less fortunate.* she said.
'This was the feelmg of the volun-
teers who worked so hatd to put
up the decorations — something
for beauty and pr«de in the com-
munity *
Lovelace went on to say that all
citizens learn right and wrong at
an early age and womdered how
the unidentified vandals must feel
about what they have done.
'Can you take pride in what you
have done, destroying a labor of
love done by volunteers for the
enjoyment of all citizens?' she
asked. "I think not.*
Lovelace said that since the
lighting project started in the
1960s, this is the first act of van-
dalism reported.
"I hope and pray that it will be
the lajsu'she-added. ^ ^ ,
. Kessler s«d that the damaged
strings of lights were adt teplaced,
"so a large pari of Christmas was
just gone this year."
Gentry said that someone took
a 30.06 and fired a shot into the
front of the new Nelson Murphy
Memorial Auditorium and Library,
shattering the double-paned glass
in the two sets of doors leading in-
to the hallway.
'The bullet passed through the
metal door frame of the second
door and traveled across the lob-
by, penetrating and lodging inside
the wall inside the auditorium it-
self,' he said.
Gentry said he found the spend
shed outside in the parking lot
about 100 feet from the door. He
said he also found several beer
cans.
'It looks , like a person or per-
sons had been out drinking and
just did it for the fun of it.' he sad

hands on the ones who did this."
Gentry said they had no
suspects and it was going to be
hard to pin the acts on anybody
because so many people were out
that evening.
"Someone's just about going to
have to come forward." Gentry
added, "and tell us something."
Investigators are not saying that
they only suspect students, but
they say they are focusing their in-
vestigations in that direction.
Also vandalized that night was
an Exxon station in Linden, where
a window was reported broken. A
spokesman for the Linden Police
Department said they "had a
couple of leads, but nothing con-
crete" on their end of the inves-
tigation.
