Athletics win Atlanta tournament championship
By KYLE YOUNG
Journal Staff Writer
The Atlanta Athletics aren't ex-
actly ready for their Oakland
counterparts by the same name,
but Atlanta was good enough to
sweep through the 15 and 16-
year-old Atlanta tournament
without losing a game.
Atlanta, now 7-1, won five
games during the tournament in
games played Friday and Satur-
day. The Athletics beat the Atlanta
Yankees 9-0 Friday night while
the A's nipped Omaha 6-5 in their
first game Saturday morning. At-
lanta beat Marshall 6-3 in their
next game while blanking Linden
12-0 in the fourth round of the
tournament. Atlanta defeated
Omaha 10-7 in the championship
game.
Athletic coach Terry Hawley
was pleased at the outcome of the
tournament.
"I'm proud of our boys today be-
cause we played one game Friday
night and we turned around and
played four games today," Hawley
said. "We got a lot of playing in.
They were tired and they still
played well and we hit the ball aw-
ful hard. We hit the ball harder
than I expected."
Because of a shortened
season, Atlanta must play all its
games within a three-week span.
"We need to play as many
games as possible," Hawley said.
"We don't have but three weeks to
play all our games and then we
have to hang it up. I just wish
more people from Atlanta would
have come out and watched some
good baseball. These are the
same kids who play high school
and we need our fans behind us
because we plan on going to
state."
Atlanta might indeed go to state
if they continue to play like they
did Saturday in the championship
game. Atlanta jumped off to a 4-0
lead in the first inning, but Omaha
battled back to eventually tie the
game at 6-all before Atlanta took
the lead for good with a single run
in the bottom of the fifth. Atlanta
added three insurance runs in the
bottom of the sixth for a 10-6 lead
before Omaha came back with a
single run in the top of the
seventh to finish the scoring at 10-

Kidd takes fifth
at Keebler meet
Atlanta's Dedrick Kidd finished
fifth in the triple jump at Satur-
day's Keebler Invitational Track
and Field meet in Elmhurst, Illinois
(a suburb of Chicago).
Kidd, who jumped 50-73/t to set
a state record in May of this year,
only jumped 48-11 at the Keebler
meet. Kidd scratched four of six
times while making one jump in
the rain. The winning jump was
only 49-8.
Seniors from 42 states and
seven foreign countries were
represented at the meet.
Kidd will compete next in The
Athletic Congress meet in Blaine,
Minnesota. If Kidd does well there
he may land a spot on one of two
junior national teams which will
compete overseas.
Everett Dickersnn and Craig Wood combined to
scatter three hits and Danny Hale had three singles
as the Atlanta Athletics beat the Atlanta Yankees 9-
0 in a first round game of the Atlanta tournament
played Friday night in Atlanta.
Athletic coach Terry Hawley said his team still
hasn't reached its peak.
"We're playing about 80 percent of our
capability," Hawley said. "We've been hitting the
ball pretty well. Pitching has been our weakness;
we've been walking a lot of people. We lost a game
to Linden last week and outhit them 13-4. Hitting
wise and defense wise we're looking pretty good."
Hawley said he is looking forward to the time
when both Atlanta teams will combine to play in the
district tournament.
"The other Atlanta team is looking pretty good,
they just haven't been putting the ball in play. I
think when we combine teams for the all-stars
we're gonna be pretty tough. Really that is what
this is all about is getting the work for both teams
and looking at the players and seeing who
deserves to be on the team."
Friday night the teams were still seperate, and it
was the Athletics who did all the scoring.
In the first inning, Danny Hale singled to left and
scored the first run of the game when Phillip Hamil-
ton doubled to left.
With two outs in the second inning, Jeremiah
Howard reached on an error by the Yankee third
baseman before Ronnie Olson also reached on a
Yankee error. Both runners scored on a single to
left field by Danny Hale to give the Athletics a 3-0
lead.
Brian Fincher and Hamilton walked to lead off
the third inning before Michael Crouch singled to
center to drive in one run. After Cliff Jones reached
on a bunt single, Howard plated two runs with a
single to left, giving the Athletics a 6-0 lead. Jones
scored the final run of the inning on a Yankee error.
Hale singled to center to lead off the fourth in-
ning, with Fincher following with a walk. Fincher
eventually scored on a passed ball after Hale was
picked off for an 8-0 Athletic lead.
In the fifth inning, Craig Wood walked and scored
on a single by Jared Stringer for the final 9-0 Ath-
letic lead.

innings, striking out four and walking three while al-
