Both Rawlinson, left, and Murphy, above, have learned that ball place-
ment is just as important, if not more so, than power.
Duo combine finesse, strength
How dare those
Cowboys go
down to Tenn-
essee and crush the
Titans.
Didn't the players
and coaches know they
were supposed to be
distracted by the latest
Terrell Owens saga?
Guess no*. Instead, they
did wh.il professionals
do, tuey focused on
their objective, which was defeating
a bad team, and they did it.
A bigger question is whether they
can play that well against a solid
Philadelphia team this weekend.
The Cowboys didn't appear con-
cerned about a situation that was
much ado about anything, and appar-
ently was nothing more than some-
one who messed up and overmed-
icated himself.
Of course, the fact it was a brash.

maybe did just have an
adverse reaction to
them. Had it not been
for his publicist Kim
Etheredge calling the
EMTs, we might be
talking about a fatality
here.
Etheredge should be
thanked for doing that,
just as she should be
ridiculed for her "25
million reasons to live"
remark at the Sept. 27 Valley Ranch
press conference. It's also interesting
to note that of all the peojj'c inter-
viewed last week at Cowboys head-
quarters, it was Owens who came
across the most clear and concise,
even taking time to thank the police
and EMTs for their swift work.
Yet, regardless of what came out
after the initial reports, there are
those who will not admit that maybe
the gun was jumped here, and would

Murphy, she's also grown as a player.
"Courtney has learned a lot more finesse," Williamson
said. "She loves to bang the ball, but she also doesn't
mind giving it some off-speed. She's learning to mix up
her shots, and is becoming an intelligent player."
Added Rawlinson, "As a sophomore, to me it was all
about putting the ball away. Now that I'm a junior, I real-
ize it's more about putting the ball (on the ground)."
Murphy and Rawlinson's new perspective has turned
them into a solid threat.
During Sept. 26 victory at Rowlett, they combined for
22 kills against the Lady Eagles.
That played a huge part in Saehse's sweep (25-23, 25-
21. 25-22).
The fact Saehse's captured that crown for two con-
secutive seasons, and had yet to suffer a district defeat,
has enlarged the target on their backs, as teams battle to
become the first district foe to tame the Lady Mustangs.
"We think about it (the streak) a lot," Rawlinson noted.
"We're working for our third district title, so everybody
is out to get us."
Added Murphy, "Everybody on the team knows a lot
of people from Naaman and Rowlett, and we hear stuff
all the time about how people are going to beat us."
Still, neither views the winning streak, and the added
intensity it gives foes, as a burden.
"It makes me want to work harder, just because I don't
want to lose," Murphy said.
Said Rawlinson, "It gets the adrenaline going, because
we can't lose one, and then our streak is gone."

arrogant, trash-talking loudmouth
named Terrell Owens who took those
pills — coupled with the fact that
many in the local and national media
despise Owens — and you have a
perfect recipe for an overblown story.
Even after Owens appeared at a
press conference looking far from a
man who recently attempted to take
his own life, and despite the Dallas
Police Department reclassifying the
case as an "accidental overdose,"
there were still those in print and on
radio who said, "We'll never really
know what happened."
To quote Col. Sherman Potter,
"Horse hockey!"
Sorry, but I think most logical1
thinking people understand that
Owens probably just blew it when it
came to taking his pain killers, or
rather engage in hearsay and try to
paint a mystery where none exists.
Fortunately, Owens' teammates
were not among those who lost their
heads during last week's carnival of
the absurd. During one post-game
interview, cornerback Aaron Glenn
suggested the media may have been
the only people distracted by last
week's televised fiasco. He was more
on the money than many in my pro-
fession may want to admit.
Unlike most of the reporters cover-
ing the event, the Cowboy players
looked at the available evidence and
came to conclusion the whole suicide
scenario was too silly to worry about.
Too bad other people didn't follow
their lead.
