At the library
By Dolores Greenwald, Sachse Public Library Director
Looking back...
Sachse Seniors plan garage sale Nov. 3
Dolores
Greenwald
As the city
begins a new
' fiscal year, I
would like to
mention a few
very interesting
library statis-
tics.
1. Our 2005
Summer
Reading Club
set a record! The number of children
who registered for the program
increased 67 percent.
2. ReferenceUSA, a business
database, had 907 searches and
75,224 previewed records. The data-
base has only been available for one
year.
It is VERY exciting to see the
growth and support of the library. The
participation that we had at our recent
book sale demonstrates your interest
and appreciation for the library.
Words alone can not express my grat-
itude to the Friends of the Sachse
Library for their hard work and limit-
less enthusiasm. If you want to meet
some wonderful people, come to their
next meeting 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24.
Also, it is wonderful to work with
community organizations like the
Sachse Chamber of Commerce. The
spirit of volunteerism is strong in
Sachse and its citizens should be
proud. As a participant in the
Leadership Sachse program, I have
learned much about the city and met
some wonderful people!
As we plan for next year, the
library staff will continue to work
hard to offer fun, educational, and
exciting programs.
There is always a new adventure
waiting for you At the Library.
The library hours are: noon - 8
p.m. Monday - Thursday, noon - 6
p.m. Friday; and, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Saturday. For more information, call
972-530-8966.

A full bus load
motored to
Grapevine and
rode the Vintage
railroad to Fort
Worth and back
last Friday.
Dinner at the
stockyards and
sightseeing were
also on the agen-
da.
Yesterday we toured the Senior
Housing 'Primrose at Park Lane' in
Garland. Senior housing is getting
closer to Sachse all the time.
Someday we will have senior facil-
ities in Sachse. We had lunch at
CiCi's on the way back home. This
was a very enjoyable trip.
Today is our birthday party for all
the October people, me being one
of them. It seems like October
comes around more often than it
used to. When you have lived
almost three-quarters of a century
everything is too fast; cars, comput-
ers, speech, and birthdays!
Tonight is the second of the
Garland Theatre productions for the
season: "Big River". It has won
seven Tony awards and is sure to be
a good one.
Tomorrow evening is FUN
NIGHT for October. It is a week
early this month because of Fallfest
being Oct. 14. I knew my body
couldn't play all evening Friday
night and then work the booths all
day Saturday.
Fallfest will be next weekend,
Saturday, Oct. 14 from 10 a.m. to 4
p.m. We have many beautiful items
for sale in our booths this year, so
don't forget to stop by and look us
over. We are also selling chances on
a set of Raggedy Ann and Andy
dolls (handmade by Dorothy Hunt)
and an original framed watercolor
of Irises by Margaret McCartney.
The dolls will be drawn on Dec. 20
and the painting will be drawn on
Feb. 21. At the Fallfest we will have
vests, cardigans, flip-flops, purses,
totes, bibs, aprons (big and little),
photo albums, greeting cards, blan-
kets, and soup & drink mixes.
Next Monday, Oct. 9, Narrisa
Hardwick will be at our center to
explain the Texas state program on
free telephones for persons with
impaired hearing. She will have
applications available and a display
of telephones. This is available to
anyone 60 years of age and older in
the state of Texas.
We will lunch at the Flying Fish
at Firewheel Town Center on
Wednesday and either shop or take
in a movie. Your choice.
We have so many special events
coming up you need to mark your
. calendar. Oct. 20 at 9:45 a.m. the
Texas Wind Musical Outreach, Inc.
is sending "Dixie Country" to
entertain us. Last year we had the
"Pacemakers" come to see us and
they were really a delightful group.
Be sure you don't miss this mini-
concert on Oct. 20.
"Elvis" will be in the building on
Oct. 18 to entertain the carry-in
Uincheon group. Bring a dish (to
serve 8) and join us. We can always
use an extra salad or vegetable. This
will give an idea so you will get
busy on your Halloween costume
for the party on the last day of
October.
The Mystery trip planned for the
27th has been sold out, but if you
are interested you can put your
name on the stay-by list. We never
know until that morning who will
and who will not be unable to go.
Baylor-Garland will be here on
Oct. 25 with a health seminar on
women's health: Breast cancer.
They do serve lunch and you do
need a reservation.
Until next time, I'll keep the door
open.
We will be having a garage sale
on Nov. 3-4 at the senior center.
You are welcome to donate items to
our sale at any time. They can be
left at the Parks & Recreation
Office.
Gene Autry Day Festival to benefit Tioga, Murphy
Raffle funds to help purchase service dog for 4-year-old with autism
By Jamie Kngle
Some would call it fate, some
would call it serendipity. Call it what
you want, but the day Gene Brown
of Sharity Productions saw Lori
Ruscitti's merchant letter requesting
donations for a silent auction is a
day neither will soon forget.
Lori Ruscitti is the mother of
Colton, a soon-to-be 4 year old with
autism. To help Colton cope and
function with daily tasks, and to help
protect Colton from wandering off,
the Ruscitti's are getting a service
dog.
The dog is being trained now by
All Purpose Canines to assist
specifically with Colton's needs.
The cost of the dog is $14,500.
The Ruscitti family is holding a
silent auction Nov. 4 to help raise
money for the dog. Lori Ruscitti sent
area merchants letters asking them
to
donate items for the auction.
One letter landed on Kimberly
Twomey's desk at Southfork Ranch.
She and Gene and Betty Wolf were
meeting about the Gene Autry
Festival & Gala, being held at
Southfork Ranch the weekend of
Oct. 6. Toward the end of the day,
the conversation drifted toward
helping other people.
Kimberly pulled out Lori's letter
as an example of people who needed
help from others. "Both my wife and
I were touched," said Gene Wolf. "I
couldn't put it out of my mind and
was thinking about it all night."
Wolf called Lori and talked about
how he and the
Gene Autry
Festival &
Gala could
help. Because
Lori was look-
ing for raffle
items, Wolf
offered a very
special auto-
graphed Martin
guitar and case
as a raffle item not for the silent auc-
tion, but as a separate raffle at the
Festival.
Gene Autry's first guitar was a
Martin guitar, purchased out of a
Sears and Roebuck catalog. The
Martin guitar being raffled at the
Gene Autry Festival is autographed
by a growing list of celebrities.
Colton
Ruscitti
"George Strait autographed it about
two weeks ago," said Wolf. "We're
scheduled to have our friend Willie
Nelson sign it soon. Ray Price will
sign it when he comes in for his con-
cert Oct. 6." C.F. Martin IV, Ray
Wylie Hubbard, Kinky Friedman,
Noel Haggard, Pauline Reese,
Bonnie Bishop, David Allen Coe
and Shooter Jennings are among the
list of signers.
"I'm really so grateful for all
Gene's help." said Ruscitti. "He's
been so generous."
"It's just a group of people work-
ing together to help someone out."
said Wolf. "This is the America I
want to remember; that's what
Americana is all about."
Five dollars from every raffle
ticket sold will be donated to All
Purpose Canines and credited direct-
ly to Colton's service dog.
Lori Ruscitti has raffle tickets and
festival tickets available for sale,
and gets $3 donated to Colton's dog
from every advance-ticket sale she
makes The Gene Autry Festival and
Gala will be held Oct. 6, 7 and 8 at
Southfork Ranch, with a concert by
Ray Price on Oct. 6 at the Gala.
Ruscitti is still accepting dona-
tions for the Nov. 4 auction at First
United Methodist Church in Sachse.
"The auction will be open from 6
p.m. to 9 p.m.," said Ruscitti. "The
silent auction will be open first, then
close for a time while some items
are auctioned live. After the live
auction, the Silent auction will re-
open for final bids." Winners will be
determined and pay for their prizes
that night and get a tax receipt. All
proceeds are tax deductible because
they go directly to All Purpose
Canines for Colton's service dog.
Colton's dog should be trained by
late spring or early summer.
For raffle tickets, advance-pur-
chase festival tickets or to donate
items for the silent auction, contact
Lori Ruscitti at 972-516-9668.

Gene Autry Festival and ticket infor-
mation is at www.geneautry festi-
val.info or metro toll free 817-589-

Heritage Association, and 2006 cel-
