Celebrity dancer puts
moves on Wylie studio
comtinutd from page 1A
top 14.
"All the contestants really
care about each other," Koehl
said. "Sure, we knew we were
competing but we still gave
each other pointers and helped
each other out."
Koehl said although per-
forming on a nationally syndi-
cated TV show has made him
somewhat of a celebrity; he
loves to be home in Garland.
"My family, faith and friends
have kept me grounded," he
said. "I've started on an amaz-
ing journey. I'm gonna ride thai
wave as far as I can."
After leaving the show, many
contestants go on to teach mas-
ter classes to supplement their
income.
DCW owners, sisters Nikki
Wintters and Jennifer Kaiser,
hired Koehl to conduct two
workshops as a way to celebrate
National Dance Day.
"Chris was actually a former
student of mine," Kaiser said.
"This is a great opportunity for
our students. I am so proud of
Chris and the whole studio."
Kaiser is an adjunct professor
at Richland College where
Koehl, a Garland resident, took
some dance classes.
DCW has a 4,(X)0 square loot
facility with a staff of 13 and
about 300 students. The center
offers classes in a variety of
styles including Ballet, Tap,
Jazz, Hip Hop, Pointe, and
T\imbling.
"I don't teach using the tradi-
tional eight counts," Koehl
announced at the start of the
class. "You'll have to watch me
and listen to the music very,
very carefully."
After a series of warm-up
exercises Koehl replaced the
classic "five, six, seven, eight"
commands'by punctuating the
music and his moves with
"Boom, boom! Zoom, zoom!
Hit-hit, kah-swoooo! Bop-bop,
pop-pop-pop!"
The students happily com-
plied, followed his lead and
nailed the routine.
After the class the kids
fon.ied a line to get an auto-
graphed photo. Some even had
their dance shoes or other work-
out clothes signed.
"This was really a great
class," Koehl said. "I really like
the studio and everyone here.
Boy, this city has grown so
much."
Koehl is scheduled to teach
several other local classes
before heading back to
California to perform in the
SYTYCD finale scheduled for
Aug. 18.
His said after the show is
over, his plan is to move to Los
Angeles and pursue a dance
career and he hopes to work
professionally with choreogra-
phers Tabitha and Napoleon
D'umo.
