Volunteer firefighter
remembered by citizens
continued from page 1A
"Pudge always had a happy
twinkle in his eye, and was
always on the edge of mischief,"
he said. "Chief Kendrick paired
me up with Greg in 1997 or so.
That seems like a lifetime ago."
Marple said in 1977 the
department was an all-volunteer
unit.
"We were a pretty tightly knit
family," he said. "We didn't
work shifts; we simply dropped
what we were doing when called
and manned the apparatus. Greg
showed me the ropes and got me
started. He helped to keep us
safe, and I always knew he had
our backs."
Marple said the unit partici-
pated in a lot of live fire training.
"These were real fires, like
wood or kerosene," he said.
Many times, we would come out
of the training looking like
something fresh off the grill, but
Pudge made sure that we stayed
safe and reminded us the goal
was that we all go home at the
end of the day. I can still remem-
ber him saying 'dad-gum, that
was a hot one!' That was about
as close as he came to cursing."
Marple said a little bit of each
of the department died with
Simmons. "He was one of the
finest, most soft-spoken guys
that you could ever be fortunate
enough to know," he said. "Greg
will never be forgotten by those
that worked beside hirn and

those that he served. Greg and
Carrie did a wonderful job rais-
ing two great daughters, and
they will continue to make their
family proud as they carry on
Greg's legacy. Pudge, you will
be greatly missed but never for-
gotten by your brothers in the
fire service."
The visitation and funeral
were held April 19 and 20 at the
Arrington-Edwards Funeral
Home in Eastland.
The community is invited to
attend a local memorial service
at 11 a.m., April 23, at First
Baptist Church of Sachse. The
church is located at 2412 3rd St.
Donations will be accepted at
the Eastland Fire Department or
Eastland High School for the
Greg Simmons Scholarship
Fund.
Kendrick announced
Simmons' death at the April 18
council meeting where he for-
mally retired his number of 112.
"Heaven is now home to a
good faithful servant," he said.
"If I know Pudge, he's up there
right now riding on an engine."
Storm watcher explains danger of dry conditions
Sachse storm watcher Scott Whitfield said the public needs to
realize the importance that drought conditions have on our safety.
"When the weathercaster mentions red flag warnings, that indi-
cates that people using fire, flames or smokers should be extreme-
ly careful," he said. "Several weather conditions contribute to the
high incidents of wildfires."
Whitfield said when areas have not had enough rain over a long
period of time, low moisture content and high winds can create an
extreme fire danger.
"High winds can be due to a front that has just moved through
the area, or they can be caused by storm systems pulling air from
the Gulf to power that system," he said. "It takes several days for
enough moisture to accumulate to lessen the fire danger. The only
way for that danger to truly be mitigated is for dry areas to receive
enough rainfall over a period of time to keep the vegetation moist
and the wind speeds to settle down to a calm rate with gusts below
20 mph."
