Members of Wylie East High
School';. yearbook and news-
paper staffs brought home a
total of 14 awards from this
year's Interscholastic League
Press Conference held April 10
at the University of Texas in
Austin.
According to their sponsor,
Casi Thedford, every spring the
students attend journalism
workshops at the conference,
and winners of the Individual
Achievement Awards are
announced. "UIL hosts around
30 different competitions in
newspaper, online newspaper.
Wylie East journalism students earn top state awards
yearbook and broadcast," she
said. "Schools can enter con-
tests from writing - headline,
captions, stories, etc. - to
design and photography."
Three places and three hon-
orable mentions are awarded in
each category.
Thedford said the ILPC also
ranks publications in one of
four categories after reading
and critiquing them. The East
yearbook received the highest
ranking, Distinguised Merit,
and the newspaper received the
second highest, Achievement.
For the yearbook. Josh Lott
placed first in the
Club/Organizational photo
competition, and Justin
Wagenhauser placed second in
Student Life Photo and third in
Sports Action Photo. The year-
book staff placed third in
General Interest Spread.
Also, Maranda Williamson
received Honorable Mention
for Index Spread; Emily Rose
won Honorable Mention for
Academic Spread, and the
entire staff received Honorable
Mention in Secondary
Coverage Graphic, for the defi-
nitions of every student in the
school in last year's yearbook.
East's newspaper staff won
awards as well. Justin
Wagenhauser won first place
for his Sports Action Photo;
Ashley Braun won second in
Editorial Writing; Alyssa
Jennings placed third in Sports
Column; Kiera Bell placed
third in Portrait; and the whole
staff placed third in Headline
Writing.
Honorable Mention Photo
Story went to Josh Lott and
Keira Bell, and Josh Lott also
won Honorable Mention
Computer Art.
"It is such a rewarding expe-
rience to see my students' hard
work achieve honors,"
Thedford said. "Each year,
they continually outdo them-
selves. I am so proud to advise
such a great group of kids. At
Saturday's registration, reading
through the packet of winners
was such a thrill. We kept spot-
ting 'Wylie East' over and over
on the list of winners."

Mustang Round-up set for August
Sachse High School fresh- Aug. 4 to attend the Mustang
man orientation will take place
from 8:15 to 11 a.m. Monday,
Aug. 15, at Sachse High
School.
The orientation will consist
of all the information you will
need to make the first few
weeks at high school a success
for incoming freshmen. They
will learn traditions, school
procedures, rules, dress code,
start learning the way around
the campus, and have the
opportunity to purchase
Mustang spirit items at our
Mustang Market.
This event gives students a
chance to meet new friends
and sign up to be a class offi-
cer, organizers said.
The registration form and
payment must be received by
Round-up.
We will not be accepting
any form of payment or regis-
tration at the door the day of
Round-up.

announced recently that
Primrose School of Firewheel
has earned accreditation from
the North Central Association
Commission on Accreditation
and School Improvement, an
accreditation division of
AdvancED.
The announcement was
made at the AdvancED
Accreditation Commission
meeting held in February in
Tempe, Ariz.
To earn accreditation,
schools must meet NCA CASI
standards, be evaluated by a
team of professionals from out-
side the school, and implement
a continuous process of school
improvement.

PLANO - Eight area schools
- including Wylie ISD's Draper
Intermediate School - turned
ordinary mailboxes into works
of art through a partnership
between Habitat for Humanity
of South Collin County and
Collin Creek Mall.
The mailboxes were decorat-
ed by students in elementary,
middle-school and high-school
art classes and will be displayed
in a garden setting in Collin
Creek Mall's lower level center
court through May 9. Each
school was provided with a sim-
ple mailbox and $50 for sup-
plies, and students put their cre-
ativity to work, transforming
each mailbox into a unique
work of art.

at the mall and at

Each mailbox is being auc-
tioned, and the public is invited

family event beginning at 8 a.m.
