Mrs. Ray Stiles of Dain-
gerfield, whose husband
works in Lone Star Steel's
spiral weld mill, has had
her name in the news fre-
quently in the past four
years.
The story began in the
fall of 1958 before Hospi-
tal in the Pines opened.
The community hospital,
governed by an independ-
ent board of directors,
was given to the area by
Lone Star Steel.
Before the hospital
opened, there was much
work to be done. A wom-
en's auxiliary formed for
the purpose of supporting
the hospital's work, pitch-
ed in. There were sup-
MRS. RAY STILES
plies to be checked in,
equipment to be unpack-
ed and set up, and other
menial work to be done.
Edna Stiles was among
the first there to help.
She later was elected the
first president of the aux-
iliary and pioneered many
of its programs. Among
these was the nurses'
aide program which has
resulted in thousands of
hours of volunteer nurs-
ing work by trained aux-
iliary members. Mrs. Stiles
has attended numerous
conventions and meetings
across the state to broad-
en her knowledge and
bring home new ideas for
the auxiliary.
For the past several
v°2rs, she has served as '
.. member of the hosnit-
al's governing body, the
board of directors.
The job pays nothing [
except the satisfaction of
knowing that her long
hours of work are help-
ing provide the finest of
care for every patient
that enters Hospital in the
Pines.
And for Edna Stiles,
that is ample reward.
