NOTE:—This poem was eompoaed
by Mrs. A. C. Teter, and dedicated
to her «on Claybourn, in honor of his
twenty-first birthday, January 1.
; In explanation of one line, Mrs.
Teter is a descendant of John Paul
Jones.
When the Lord , of .all one day,
Viewed the universe, His love and
power held sway,
He gathered from that celestial
realnt
A speck of love, a bit of heaven;
In His wisdom He saw fit to intrust
to me the heavenly bit.
He placed it securely beneath my
heart,
Of my flesh and of my soul to be a
part.
As life quickened this human spark,
Mother love melted my heart.
The melted heart—which is mother
love,
Enclosed this tiny speck from above.
After a season of Waiting,
Then as to nature's plan,
J gave to the world a babe;
This babe to be a man.
Your infancy has passed, now you
are that man.
The grasp of the right and the wrong
is at hand.
As on life's journey you would em-
bark,
Hearken, to a word that I now im-
part
It may serve you as a code in some
way,
Or perhaps be a signal to safety
some day.
Your heavenly father hath given to
your destine,
A soul, a life, and a fertile brain.
From your earthly father you should
inherit
Love for . your fellowman, a life ol
merit.
-Tom distant heritage your character
should contain courage, strength
desire for worth to attain.
vVould, that you not lower ancestriai
strain.
The blood of the nation's brave doth
surge in your vien.
From me—not a base sinner, nor a
risen saint—
But so have lived, that you have bodj
without scar, and blood fret
from taint.
May you love life, beauty and song,
iteady to smile, revel in sport tt
which honor and moral belong.
This is natural inheritance of whic.
1 have told,
iou have no endoment of silver oi
irou have no endowment of silver oi
Hold.
Now these teachings I wish to be
stow,
i'ou shall reap that which you sow.
iour God and Creator, you mus>.
love and obey.
. o your country and flag your re-
spect you should pay,
.Vomanhood, chaste and true, should
receive esteem and protection
from you.
And not the least I've told,
Be kind and thoughful to the old.
There are fallen leaders, in whose
vacancy you may have a place,
Be mindful, there is always room in
the pit of disgrace.
