to be honored Jan. 17
Football and volleyball pla-
yers at Bastrop High School
will be honored by the Bast-
rop Bear Backers Club at an
awards banquet Saturday
Jan. 17.
The public is invited to the
dinner at 7pm honoring fall
athletes. A bar-b-que dinner
will be served at the high
school auditorium. Tickets,
at $4, are available at the'
high school office or from
Bear Backers president Bob-
by Greeness or vice presi-
dent Jerry Mathison.
Jim Walker, head football
coach at Southwest Texas
State University, will be the
featured speaker.
The Rusty,. Reynolds
Team Spirit Award, and
Lions Club Most Valuable
Player Award will be given
to members of the boys
football squads and The Mo-
st Valuable Player Award
will go to the outstanding
girl volleyball player.
Staudt rites held
Funeral services were
held Jan. 5 at Sacred Heart
'Catholic Church in Rockne
for Andrew L.'Staudt, 45, of
Cedar Creek who died Jan.
2.
Born in Bastrop on Feb. 4,
1935 to the late Richard and
Josephine Lehman Staudt,
he attended schools in Rock-
ne and Comfort, then enter-
ed the U.S. Navy. He was a
veteran of the Korean War
and retired with 20 years
service in the Naval Re-
serve last August. He was a
carpenter and a member of
Sacred Heart Parish.
Reverend Leonard Leddy
officiated at a Rosary ser-
vice Jan. 4 at Newby Funer-
al Home and at the funeraL
Burial was at Sacred Heart
Cemetery in Rockrie with
military honors.
He is survived by his
wife, Joyce Staudt of Cedar
Creek, four sons, Richard,
Mark, Michael and David
Staudt of' Cedar Creek,
three daughters, Ann Knob-
lock of Tacoma, Cynthia
Staudt and Tonya Staudt of
Cedar Creek, a brother,
Franklin Staudt of Neder-

for victim
Donations of food, clothing
and household items for the
Booker T. Smith family,
whose Cedar Creek home
was destroyed by fire, are
being collected at the Bas-
trop Neighborhood Center
on Spring St., announced
Center Director Francis Ho-
rnsby.
Smith's son, Earl Chester
Smith, 20, died in the blaze.
But Smith, his wife Vera,
and a 15-year-old son, lost all
their household goods, expl-
ained Mrs. Hornsby.
The frame home on the
farm occupied by the Smiths
since 1908 was leveled by a
fire which broke out shortly
after 4 p.m.
Donations for ,the Smiths
will be collected "the rest, of
the month" and may be. left
at the center on weekdays
between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.,
said Mrs. Hornsby.

as Legion manager
W. F. (Smitty) Smith, club
martager of James Perkins
Post 533 American Legion,
is back on the job again
after the post's executive
committee clarified lines of
command.
Smith resigned the job
briefly around the start of
thfc new year. His friends
said he felt he could not
manage the bar, book even-
ts and work with personnel
unless his supervision was
respected by employees and
officers.
Smith has been club man-
ager for more than two
jyears at a time when the
post has won awards for
membership expansion due
to cooperative efforts by
officers, members and staff.

for meet
The Ladies Auxiliary of
the LBA Volunteer Fire De-
partment has postponed
their January meeting until
Tuesday, January 13, 1981.
Due to the desire of many
of the members to attend
the City Council meeting
Monday night to discuss the
three dollar addition to their
water bills, Lee Leverett,
president, has announced
the change of the Auxiliary
meeting from Monday, Jan-
uary 12th to Tuesday, Jan-
uary, 13th. The meeting will
be held at the home of Sandi
Kohring at 7:30 p.m. All
members and new-comers
are urged to attend.

course set
Bastrop Independent Sch-
ool District Vocational De-
partment is offering a Eight
week course in adult educa-
tion entitled "Upgrading Ex-
isting Office Skills" . Febru-
ary ,9 - April 3.
Adults who have already
learned a skill in the office
occupations field and who
would like to upgrade levels
of proficiency and compe-
tence in typing, office mach-,
ines (calculators, adding ma-
chines) duplication, filing,
machine transcribing and
business English and math
are encouraged to apply for
the training.
Classes will be held in the
evenings.

Pharr in the Rio Grande
Valley. She has done book-
keeping work and before
moving to Bastrop was em-
ployed by the Mental Health
and Mental Retardation cen-
ter in Giddings. Her hus-
band is a correctional officer
at Bastrop Federal Correct-
ional. The couple has four
children and lives in KC
Estates.
"It sounds like it's going
to be a lot of fun," Mrs.
Bishop says of her new
assignment.
