$145,000 in donations sought to equip new Bastrop library
Looking forward to opening a
new publjc library in Bastrop next
spring, the city library board has
launched a drive for private dona-
tions to pay for new furniture,
landscaping and parking.
The city will spend up to
$234,000 plus a $100,000 grant to
erect a 6,000-square-foot building
at the corner of Spring and Church,
the site of an old Bastrop ice house
and the present city warehouse.
The site is already linked to park
areas along the river by a walking
trail and the city paries board is
planning further improvements.
But to complete the new library
including fixtures and furnishings
as envisioned by planners will re-
quire up to $145,000 in private do-
nations, said Library Director
Putzie Martin.
The new facility can open with
old furniture from the present
library, of course, said Mrs.
Martin.
But the board hopes for complete
new start.
Even moderately priced
equipment may not be cheap, Mrs.
Martin concedes.

The current library building on
Water Street was built in 1972 and
its 2,400 square feet are over-
crowded with 20,000 volumes and
other special collections including
large print books, Texana, current
periodicals, microfilm collections
of the Bastrop Advertiser, county
records, early census records and
genealogy materials.
Officials expect new library con-
struction to begin this summer af-
ter the old ice house and city
warehouse are removed from the
site.
Bastrop residents organized the
first library in town as early as
1852. The city government took
over library responsibilities begin-
ning about 1900.
The public library governed by
a city-appointed board of directors
was organized in 1970 before con-
struction of the Water Street build-
ing. The Bastrop library joined the
State Library System and Central
Texas Library System in 1978.
