THE JUNIOR HISTORIAN
Watrous had planned, prior to his be-
coming a federal judge, to use his po-
litical connection as a means of validat-
ing fraudulent Texas land certificates
for the New York City land company
of which he was a member. The opera-
tions of the land company extended to
cover 24,731,764 acres of land, besides
being involved in the proceeds of other
interests of immense value.
Senator Houston then told about the
lobbying practices of the land company.
He declared that the members of thiscompany had a "great aptitude for
'log-rolling'," and the dishonorable
practices of the lobby. He asserted that
obviously they deemed themselves quite
powerful in this respect, judging from
their many schemes of this sort. They
seemed to have a high amount of self-
,esteem, and their frequent successes
probably led them to believe that noth-
ing was too hard or too great for them
to attempt.
