Sieur de La Salle, the French
explorer, was in Texas, he es-
tablished Fort St. Louis near Matagorda
Bay. During 1721 and 1722, the Marquis
de Aguayo led an expedition into Texas
and established three missions and re-
founded seven. He established the pre-
sidio Nuestra Sefiora de Loreto de La
Bahia, commonly known as La Bahia,
and mission Nuestra Seiora del Espiritu
Santo de Zuiiga in 1722, upon the order
of the King of Spain to build them on the
same site where Fort St. Louis had been
built by the French. The mission Espiritu
Santo was put under the guardianship ofLa Bahia.
In 1726, La Bahia and Espiritu Santo
were moved to the west bank of the Gua-
dalupe River at Mission Valley.
The mission and presidio flourished at
their new location. The remains of these
buildings have been found at Mission
Valley, which is near Victoria.
In 1749, Espiritu Santo and La Bahia
were finally moved to their present loca-
tion on the San Antonio River. The old
town of Goliad, formerly known as La
Bahia, grew by the mission.
According to a report written in No-
vember, 1749, the Presidio La Bahia
