With BURT RULE
Rice Institute and Houston high
schools made progress last week—
but it was largely in reverse. Rice
was all but run out of the Tiger
stadium at Baton Rouge, and the
best the two high schools we are
particularly interested in, Lamar
and San Jacinto, could do was to
score a loss and a tie.
The net accomplishment for the
high schools as a whole was two
wins, three ties and two losses. You
figure the percentage. Lamar, up
against one of the better teams of
the state, and on foreign soil, gave
a good, if not satisfactory account
of itself, by holding Brackenridge
to 13 points, after scaring the San
Antonio outfit half to death by
their sterling play in the first half.
San Jacinto took high honors for
the week by holding the state
champions of 1944 at Port Arthur
to a 13-13 tie. And that was done
on foreign soil, too. It looks like
maybe the Bears have something
we didn't realize.
According to records to date it
looks like San Jacinto should sup-
plant Austin as the co-favorite
with Milby. We saw the Mustangs
struggle futilely against the invad-
ers from Mexico, and this, coupled
with their defeat by Ball High of
Galveston, who were outplayed if
not outscored by Reagan, makes it
appear that the Austin lads were
put a bit too high on the pre-season
honor roll.
Milby continued unimpeded in its
winning ways and remains the only
school with an unblemished record.
Jeff Davis looked better than
good — perhaps excellent — in its
win over a power-laden St. Thomas
club, Reagan displayed fine defen-
sive play in its tussle with Ball of
Galveston, and the scrappy little
Sam Houstons eked out another
scoreless tie, this time with South
Park of Beaumont.
So far as we can determine from
the reports of the game there is
nothing of much cheer that can be
said about the Rice-Louisiana game.
Again it was weak line play, par-
ticularly on defense, that was the
major factor in the disaster. Of
course we still have hopes this will
be remedied. Neely-coached teams
are always a bit slow in developing
and perhaps by the time the Owls
get around to Conference competi-
tion they will be ready to give
somebody a lot of trouble. The op-
position this Saturday won't be
quite so stiff (Southwestern) and
believe it or not we are picking the
Owls to win by a close margin.
Some interesting trials are on the
docket for this week-end. Accord-
ing to our official schedule Lamar
will be idle until October 12, when

a good thing the Redskins have an
extra week of preparation for this
toughy.
Combining our flimsy predictions
with the coming week's schedule:
San Jacinto will win from St.
Thomas after a hard evening of
work on Thursday; Davis will win
handily from Beaumont Friday and
Milby won't have too much trouble
with Tech High School from San
Antonio. Austin will have to travel
to Beaumont to beat South Park,
and Sam Houston to Galveston to
get beat by Ball High and Reagan
