E. H. Sothern tells an amusing story

"Having parted with one of tho
members of the company In Chi-
cago," said Mr. Sothern, "I took

ing a sort of leader of supers. I
used to hear the people address him
aa 'Doc,' and one day I asked him
why he was entitled to this distinc-
tion. He said that he had at one
time worked In a bicycle repair shop.
"Shortly after, I asked him one
evening, while 1 was dressing after
the play, to take my little dog out
for a walk, lie did not roturn, and
as l passed a barroom on my way
homo, I saw my dog sitting on a
chair. I entered and found the dog
was contemplating the 'actor,' who
was leaning on the bar with hia
hack to me. He was surrounded by
a dozen men who seemed to be treat-
ing.
"As I stood watching the picture,
one of thn treaters said, addressing
my friend 'Really, Mr. Krohman,
so you think you will not bring Mr.
Sothern to Chicago again?' 'No, sir,'
said tho supposed Mr. Krohman, 'thla
town doesn't suit me! It ain't no
good! My star' can't play to more
than twenty or twenty-five thousand
a week here, and that don't do us uo
good.'
"While his llstenors stood open-
mouthed at this Idea of poor busi-
ness, I callod out: 'Smythe!' The
glass fell from his hand, the dog
Jumped off tho chair, and 'Mr. Froh-
man,' the great manager, followed mo
