By Bart Burgess
First Baptist Church
It's 10 o'clock. Do you know
where your children are? This
was the popular phrase of the
news in a bygone era. While
we would never argue with
the parent's need to know
where their child is, especially
when it is late.
But do you know where
your children are spiritually?
Is your child biblically liter-
, ate? Are your children pro-
gressing in the faith?
The fact is that as we en-
ter into this great time of
year when our seniors have
all but checked out and are
coasting until graduation, the
truth is that they are going
to be thrust into the "brave
. new world" and statistically
# speaking many of them will
not survive spiritually.
Are we teaching our chil-
dren well? While many will
know how to throw a ball or
balance an equation, 85 per-
cent of "born again teens" do
not believe in the existence of
absolute truth, according to
George Barna. More than half
of those surveyed said they
believed that Jesus sinned
, during his earthly life.
This should really be of no
surprise to us. We claim that
our faith is of great importance
to us yet very little is passed
BART BURGESS
to our children. What percent-
age of your child's daily activ-
ity is spent in the formation of
their spiritual growth?
Ask parent's what they
want most for their children
and you are most likely to
hear " to get a good educa-
tion." While there is nothing
wrong with a good education,
that is not to be our primary
goal. If I teach my son to keep
his eye on the ball and do not
teach him about Jesus Christ
then I have failed him as a fa-
ther.
We continually place our
children in the arena of world
ideas with no sense of what to
believe. If we do not teach our
children, someone will and
you will not like what they

are taught.
Parents, it is entirely pos-
sible for us to never miss a
game, never miss a school
function, but to miss the point.
The truth is that our children
will rarely rise above the ex-
ample they see in us. If we
have no regard for the Bible,
then it is likely that they will
follow. If we are not attentive
to worship then our children
will be lazy also.
Parents, we are in this
struggle together but it is
worth every ounce of our en-
ergy. Let me leave you with
some sound advice from the
Apostle Paul in Ephesians
5:15-21
"Look carefully then how
you walk, not as unwise but
as wise, making the best use
of the time, because the days
are evil. Therefore do not be
foolish, but understand what
the will of the Lord is. And
do not get drunk with wine,
for that is debauchery, but be
filled with the Spirit, address-
ing one another in psalms and
hymns and spiritual songs,
singing and making melody
to the Lord with your heart,
giving thanks always and for
everything to God the Father
in the name of our Lord Je-
sus Christ, submitting to one
another out of reverence for
Christ."

Day of Prayer slated May 1
This year's National Day of
Prayer is again formatted as
a morning service on Thurs-
day, May 1, with plans to be
finished in plenty of time for
participants to get to school
and work.
„ "We've had good response
' the last two years, so we de-
cided to continue with the
early morning time," said
Jerry Krueger of First Unit-
ed Methodist Church, who
is helping to coordinate the
event along with other mem-
bers of the Albany Ministe-
rial Alliance.
"That way, whole families
can come before school, and
it also affords an opportunity
for those who work in Abilene
or other communities to come
by as they're leaving town."
The service will take place
as usual at the Gazebo on the
Courthouse Square.
A light breakfast will be
served, with the prayer time
to follow until about 7:40 a.m.
"We know that there are
those who need to leave to get
to school or work, and we will
be respectful of that," said Al-
liance president Trey Little.
"If you want to stay longer,
you're welcome to do so."
Albany's regular bi-month-
ly blood drive, once again
sponsored by the Albany Ki-
wanis Club, is set this Thurs-
day, April 24, starting during
the noon hour.
The Meek Blood Center's
mobile unit will be located on
the parking lot of the First
Baptist Church from 12:00
noon to 6:00 p.m., and local
citizens are urged to spend
less than an hour to give a
single gift that can save as
many as three lives.
The 3f donors who gave
blood on February 28, includ-
ing several local high school
students, are eligible to give
again this month.
According to Frances Bak-
er, Meek donor recruiter,, the
blood center's average dis-
tribution in the past totals
about 1,100 units of blood to
15 area hospitals and medi-
cal facilities. However, the
figures continue to go up as
more people are being treated
in Abilene for cancer.
Meek explained that the
biggest users of blood and
blood products are cancer pa-
tients, open heart surgery pa-
tients and trauma patients.
Cancer patients undergo-
ing chemotherapy treatment
may require as many as six
units of platelets a day. Plate-
lets are the clotting agent in
the blood.
Patients undergoing open
heart surgery average using
four units of red cells, and
sometimes need as many as
eight units of red cells, in ad-
dition to platelets and fresh
frozen plasma.
Trauma patients may
need as many as 30 units of
red cells upon arrival to the
hospital.
Few Restrictions
There is not an upper age
restriction on donating blood.
As long as a person is at least
17 years of age, weighs over
110 pounds, is in good health
and free from infection, he or
she may donate blood.
Blood may be donated
while taking aspirin and
most maintenance medica-
tions for blood pressure, hor-
mones, antidepressants and
cholesterol.
According to information
from the Meek Center, only
five percent of the general
population ever gives blood,
but about 90 percent of peo-
ple who live to age 70 will
need blood at some point in
their lives.
For other information
about donor eligibility, visit
the Meek website at www.
meekbloodcenter.org.
