The recent statement made by
Secretary of the Treasury Mc-
Adoo that if the present increase
in the rateof expenditures of the
United States Government keeps
up, the Treasury will disburse
$2l.tHMMHNl.OOO in the fiscal year
ending June 30, 1919, attaches
unusual interest to the figures
for the jH'ruid from March 1.
1917, to June I. 1918, because it
shows the rapidly increasing cost
of the war.
Disbursements of the Treasury
Department as shown by the
daily Treasury statements ag-
gregated $12,513,262,563. 13 dur-
ing that period. Of this amount
$7.013,251,770.50 was for ordi-
nary disbursements. $5,380,329,-
750 was for foreign loans: and
$110,081,042.63 for special dis-
bursements.
The increase in ordinary dis-
bursements during the period is
interesting. In March. 1917,
these disbursements were $72,-
773,903.20, and in May, 1018.
they had increased to $1,068,-
203,026.82. The total disburse-
ments for March, 1017, were
$09,950,709.32, as against SI.-
508,196.233.65 in May, 1918.
Foreign loans in the period ag-
gregated $5,:t80,329,750. No for-
eign loans were made in March.
1917. but in April. 1917, $2U0,-
((00,000 was loaned to foreign
governments. Th<i 'argest am-
ount of foreign loans made in a
incnth during the period was
$ 192,""•'."00 in Deceml er. 1917.
The estimate of disbursements
for the twelve months beginning
July 1, 1918, made by Secretary
McAdoo, of $2,000,000,000 per
month is an increase of almost
150 per cent for the average
monthly disbursements for the
past fifteen months which were
$834,217,504.20.
