I have seen some farmers fail the food and feed is needed so
for the reason that they would
grow one crop continously on the
same land, year after year.
There are several reasons why
we should diversify and rotate
our crops this spring. First, we

ly. For an example, if we plant
cotton year after year, the cot-
ton plant will absorb all the sub-
stance from the land that is re-
quired to grow cotton, and will
leave the other plant undisturb-
ed. Another reason for rotating,
is that it controls the plant in-
sects much better. If you plant
cotton in one field one year and
then plant it in another lield an-
other year, you aid a great deal
in ridding your lield of cotton-
boll weevil, and other insects.
The same rule applies to the in-
sects in corn, wheat and other
crops. You can also control the
weeds much better by rotating.
Some crops have their peculiar
weeds that are in some way fa-
vored by them, and probably the
same weeds, if the land is plant-
ed in another crop would be
^mothered out.
A great benefit that comes
fiom rotating is that some crop
| plants have a much deeper root
i system than others. If we will
change crops on the same land
each year, we will get the bene-
i fit of all the substance in our
soil. The deep root plants ob-
tain their food, below the zone,
If in 'V' ich the ordinary shallow
' root plants take their food, and
have a favorable effect in open-
; ing up the sub-soil, for the shal-
' low root plants.
Soil sometimes contains organ-
ic substances that are harmful to
some plants, while the same sub-
stance is not always injurious to
other plants. For an example,
1 have seen cotton die on land
where it had been planted in
cotton for a number of years,
and by changing it to some other
crop, it will produce well.

Dear Sir: No doubt you
would like to publish this as I
am an old Texas Central boy.
1 worked in the Bridge and
Building Department on the
Texas Central H iilroad for fif-
teen y ars. I began work with
Mr. S. S. White in the bridge
gang. Soon after the tr.ick was
laid into Botan, I became Bridge
Foreman. I built the bridges
between DeLeon and Cross-
Plains. At that time Mr. J, P.
Head, was Superintendent of
the Bridge and Building De-
partment. I appeciate what Mr. I
Head has done for me. I left I
the Texas Central Railroad in'
Feb., l! ir>, and went to Rene ,
Nevada, and took charge of the
Bridge and Building Department
on the Nevada-Californie-Oregon
By., which is a narrow guage
road. I have just been appoint-
ed Master car builder and Su|>-
■erintendent of bridge and build-
ing with headquarters at Altu-
ras, California.
Yours truly,
H. E. Gasaway.
The Ladies Aid and Missionary
society met Tuesday afternoon
with Mrs. Crawford Brazzell.
The Scripture lesson was led by
the president, Mrs. R. S. Murrie,
and the subject, that of Obedi-
ence, was effectively discussed.
After a short business session,
the meeting was closed with a
prayer by Mrs. McMahen. The
society will meet next week with
Mrs. J. B. Jenkins.
