Task force to study local problems
Local issues and problems and
possible solutions will be dis
cussed when a large group of
citizens meet as a study group on
Thursday, April 19.
Sixty local citizens have been
asked to meet at 7:00 p.m. at the
courthouse as part of a statewide
long-range planning program,
sponsored by the Texas Agricul-
tural Extension Service.
Michael Gruber, county exten-
sion agent, will conduct the meet-
ing, and Tom Humber will serve
as overall moderator.
Several 10-minute "overviews"
will begin the meeting, presented
by three panel members. John
Huffman with The First National
Bank of Albany will discuss
economics, and Albany Chamber
of Commerce President K.C.
Jones will give a presentation on
local "social" issues. Alan Heir-
man with the Soil Conservation
Service will lead an overview on
environmental concerns.
Those attending will divide into
four task forces to discuss
agriculture and natural re-
sources, home economics, youth
and community development.
Each task force will identify
matters of public concern in its
area. The entire study group will
then discuss how these affect
county conditions.
More than 12,000 Texans par-
ticipated in a similar program
four years ago to identify local
needs.
For more information concern-
ing the meeting, contact Gruber
at 762-2232.

There are three ways to join the Fort Griffin Fandangle
Association. Patrons are members who give $125 or
more to support the outdoor musical first presented in
1938. These donors are listed in the summer program.
Regular membership dues are $25 annually, and
Pioneer members age 65 and over pay $10 per year. All
contributions are tax deductible, as the Fandangle is a
non-profit and charitable corporation, and all members
are invited to attend the 1990 Fandangle Membership
Picnic and Sampler at Reynolds Bend. Also, members
are given a chance to select seats for the summer show
as soon as their memberships are received. Please help
us support the continuation of this historical outdoor
pageant by joining the Fort Griffin Fandangle Associa-
tion now as a Patron, Regular or Pioneer member. Mail
your checks to PO Box 155, Albany, Texas 76430.

History to be published
Members of the Shackelford
County Historical Commission
will sponsor the publication of a
book-length history of Shackel-
ford County and its people. The
unanimous decision to publish the
book was made during the Mon-
day night, April 9 meeting of the
SCHC at the Old Jail Art Center.
Meeting with the group were
Helen Lance and Jesse White,
representing the Taylor Publish-
ing Company. White and Lance
outlined information needed to
begin the project.
SCHC President Alexene Gar-
litz appointed Joan Farmer to
serve as chairman for the publish-
ing project. Every Shackelford
County family will be asked to
submit a family history for inclu-
sion in the book, Farmer said.
Additional information will be
made available as planning pro-
gresses.
High sentenced March 28
Lena Roberts High pled guilty
to possession of a controlled sub-
stance during a session of 259th
District Court on March 28.
District Judge Quay Parker pre-
sided in the Shackelford County
Courthouse Courtroom.
High pled guilty to possession
of a controlled substance,
Lysergic Acid, Diethylamide,
penalty group I, with one prior
conviction, and was fined $5,000
and received 10 years probation.
She was also ordered to reim-
burse the county $200 for at-
torney's fees, $342.16 restitution
for medical expenses and $279 for
court costs. She was also ordered
to complete 100 hours of com-
munity service.
Charges of possession of a con-
trolled substance, amphetamine,
penalty group II, were dismissed
against High because of her con-
viction in the other case.
Sheriff impounds plane
A Cessna 152 piloted by Tom
Bailey of Abilene sustained
damage after plowing into the
east fence at Albany Municipal
Airport/Hickman Field late Mon-
day afternoon.
According to City Manager
Bobby Russell, the aircraft appar-
ently "ran off the runway and ran
through a fence into Calvin Brad-
ford's pasture around 4:30 p.m.
Monday."
"There was considerable
damage," Russell said. "The pro-
peller was bent and the vertical
stabilizer was damaged. There
were also dents underneath the
plane."
The plane was leased by Bailey
from Abilene Aero. Bailey and a
passenger, Tim Anderson, were
unhurt in 4he incident. Both men
are Dyess Air Forci Base person-
nel.
The pilot was apparently doing
"touch and go" at the airport, ac-
cording to Sheriff Ben J. Riley.
"They told me that a dog ran in
front of them and caused them to
run through the fence."
Following the accident, a local
citizen picked up Bailey and An-
derson and brought them to town.
Riley said that his office was not
contacted until "a couple of hours
later."
Riley impounded the plane
pending further investigation.
"The Federal Aviation Ad-
ministration in Lubbock and the
military police have been con-
tacted to investigate," Riley said.
"The plane will be impounded un-
til the cause of the accident can be
determined."
Russell and Albany Mayor
Wayne Hogan repaired the fence
at the airport Monday evening.
