By Donnie A. Lucas
The Albany varsity girls ran
and jumped their way to take
their second consecutive team ti-
tle at the District 7-2A track meet
held Thursday and Friday, April
12 and 13, in Anson.
The Albany girls amassed 133
points for the first place trophy,
and also qualified five girls in
seven events for the regional
track meet.
The Lionettes' 400 and 800
meter relay teams both took first
place honors at the meet, record-
ing their best times of the season.
The Lady Lions also dominated
the field events.
Albany was followed by Hamlin
in second place with 105 points,
Haskell won third with 80, and
Jim Ned placed fourth with 67
points. Stamford took fifth with
63 and Anson was sixth with 56.
Relay Teams Take First
The foursome of Denise Cauble,
Kim Bartee, Jennifer Norman and
Aydalu Delgado teamed up to win
both the 400 and 800 meter
relays.
The Albany 400 relay turned in
a 50.08 for first, followed by Stam-
ford in second with 51.7S).
The top two teams or in-
dividuals in each event qualify for
the regional meet.
The 800 meter relay ran the
two laps of the track in 1:46.97 for
first place, just ahead of Hamlin
with a 1:47.66.
"The relays did a great job,"
said Coach Deana Adams. "They
improved their times and
qualified for regional — that is all
I can ask of them."
The is the fourth year that
Albany has qualified either the
400 or 800 meter relay teams, or
both, for the regional meet.
The 1,600 meter relay team of
Misty Steddum, Holly Harvick,
Tammy Henderson and Twana
Vickers placed fifth at the meet
with a time of 4:34.
Individuals Qualify For Region
Several girls also qualified for
the regional meet in individual
events.
Kim Bartee qualified in the 200
meter, high jump and triple jump
— as well as the two relays.
Denise Cauble also qualified in
five events — including the
relays, the 100 meter, the long
jump and triple jump.
Jennifer Norman earned
another trip to region in the 100
meter and Twana Vickers ad-
vanced in the high jump.
Albany swept the high jump,
taking all three top spots. Bartee
cleared 5-0 for first, followed by
Vickers with 5-0 in second, and
Tammy Henderson took third
with 4-10.
Denise Cauble earned three
first place medals, placing first in
the long jump with a leap of 17-3.

jump with 36-3'A, and first in the
100 meter with a time of 13.00.
Kim Bartee won second in the
triple jump with a distance of
35-3 lh and first in the 200 meter
dash with 26.61.
Jennifer Norman followed Cau-
ble in the 100 meter for second
place with a time of 13.03.
Aydalu Delgado will serve as
alternate in the 100 meter hurdles
after winning third with a time of
17.48. Delgado also took a pair of
fourth place ribbons home in the
shot put and discus. She had a
toss of 30-4 in the shot and threw
83-0 in the discus.
Susan Wilfong earned two
sixth place finishes in the 100
meter and 300 meter hurdles.
In other running events, Twana
Vickers finished sixth in the 200
meter with a 29.7, Angie Box
earned sixth in the 800 meter run
and Misty Steddum took sixth in
the 400 meter run.
"The weather and the way they
did the district meet helped us
some this year," said Adams. "It
was cloudy and not too hot. It also
helped having the preliminaries
and finals on two different days."
The running prelims were held
on Thursday evening, while the
field events and finals were on
Friday.
"We have an excellent chance
of qualifying in several events for
state again this year," said the
coach. "We are in the top three in
our region in just about
everything."
Adams added that competition
at the regional level is also
"tough, but it looks very good —
we have got the times and dis-
tances to qualify some girls for
state."
The girls will attend a regional
qualifiers meet in Breckenridge
on Friday, April 20.
The regional meet is set for Fri-
day and Saturday, April 27 and
28, at Abilene Christian Univer-
sity.
