Having sung^jjout "peace
on earth" throughout the holi-
days, many of us have no peace
when it comes to our finances;
All of us have been impactedjn
some way by the credit crisis,
the plunge in stock values and
government bailouts. Although
we're heaving a sigh of relief at
the gas pumps these days, we
know that continually falling
oil prices cannot be good for
the local economy. We don't
have to look very hard to find
reasons to be concerned about
the economic future.
How can we find peace in
such trying circumstances?
Financial problems never
remain isolated from the rest
of life. They affect everything
from our marriages, to how we
interact with our children, to
our giving and involvement in
our churches.
Sometimes financial prob-
lems are completely outside
of our control. No matter how
responsible we are, we can still
be victims of a failing economy.
Often, however, our financial
difficulties are caused, and
always magnified, by the bad fi-
nancial habits we form and the
unwise choices we make. Since
that is true, we can relieve
stress and lessen the impact
of the economic downturn by
forming good habits and inak-

ANTHONY PARKER
do not guarantee true peace.
Peace can come only through
a committed relationship with
God through Jesus Christ.
But some Christians seem
to believe that talking about
finances is somehow "un-
spiritual." The truth is that
Scripture talks extensively
about money and being good
managers of the resources God
has entrusted us with.
In spite of this, misconcep-
tions persist. Minister and
author Steve May talks about
several common misconcep-
tions that Christians and
others hold about money. One
of these is that "money is the
root of all ev il," This, of course,
misquotes 1 Timothy 6:10
which actually says, 'The love
of money is the root of all kinds
of evil." Money itself is not evil,
but it is wrong to pursue money
■or wealth fo>;ittjown sake.-We
should love people and use
money to demonstrate that
love. Still, even though every-
one wants and needs money, we
don't feel that money doesn't
belong in a spiritual conversa-
tion. In reality, the way we use
our money shows the priorities
of our hearts. Nothing could be
more spiritual.
Another misconception is
the erroneous idea that "God
needs my money." God is not
poor. When you give, you are
not getting God out of a jam.
What you are doing is opening
the door that allows God's work
to flow through you. That is
why it is more blessed to give
than to receive.
Although we've often been
told that i t's not true , a lot of us
still hold to the misconception
that "having enough money
will make me happy." How
much do you need to be happy?
Would a million dollars make
you happy? Few truly wealthy
people are satisfied with their
first million. It's not wrong
to pursue financial goals.
It's not wrong to be wealthy.
Wealthy people tend to write
the pay checks for the rest of
us. But wealth does not bring
happiness.
Afourth misconception that
we tend to tell ourselves is, "If I
only had enough money, I could
do a lot of good." Of course,
churches and other charities
are in no position to turn down
adonation. And you can do a lot
of good with money. We mustn't
think, however, that we must
wait on money before we can
do good.
Ultimately, money doesn't
solve social problems, people
do. Money doesn't spread the
gospel, people do. It takes
money to do a lot of things,
but unless we are willing to
give our time and even our
lives, money by itself can't do
anything. There is also a lot
of good that can be done for
not much money. That doesn't
m«an it's not costly, but the
costs are something other than
' financial.
No, money doesn't bring
peace, but unwise use of your
money can certainly bring
turmoil. Ultimately, financial
peace does not come through
amassing wealth, but through
making wise, God-directed
decisions about the money that
he entrusts us with.
With credit cards over-
loaded from holiday spend-
ing, and the national econ-
omy reeling, local residents
may be feeling overwhelmed
by debt.
The Albany Church of
Christ is offering a program
designed to help participants
get finances under control
and develop healthier spend-
ing and saving habits.
A free preview of Dave
Ramsey's Financial. Peace
University will be offered at
the church at 4:00 p.m. on
Sunday, January 11,
Those who enroll at that
time or by January 25
will receive an extensive
membership kit and life-
time membership in the
program.
The actual 13 week class
will begin February 8 from
4:00to6:00p.m. Classeswill
not be held during the first
weekend of spring break,
on Easter Sunday, and will
conclude before Memorial
Day weekend.
More than 70% of Ameri-
cans live paycheck to pay-
check. Over 35% of'Christian
marriages end in divorce,
and money problems are the
number one cause. Financial
Peace University has a long
history of helping families
successfully confront these
problems head on.
"The program is a Bibli-
cally based accountability
curriculum that will teach
participants to manage
money and resources in a
Godly way. It empowers
students to make the right
financial decisions to achieve
their financial goals, teach-
ing them to eliminate del?t,
build wealth, and give like
never before," said Anthony
Parker, church minister.
"On average, families
reduce their debt by $5,300*
and save $2,700 in just 91
days."
