Albany play picked as alternate
Albany high School's entry in
the U.I.L. Area One-Act Play com-
petition was named regional
alternate during Saturday's con-
test in the Albany High School
Auditorium.
Plays entered by Seagraves
and Shallowater high schools
were chosen to advance to the
regional contest by the judge,
David Underwood of Midwestern
University in Wichita Falls.
AHS actress Prairie Parker
was named to the Area All-Star
Cast. Three were named to the
Honorable Mention All-Star Cast
— Ryan Ford, Melissa Compton
and Eddie Mikeska.
"I was very pleased with our
performance Saturday, but I was
not quite ready for one-act to be
over," commented Vickie Wilson,
who served as sponsor and direc-
tor of the project.
"I have always said that I
believe the area competition to be
the hardest of all," the director
said. "I'm proud of what we have
accomplished."
"I have had the best bunch of
kids," she added. "If I had to hand
pick a group to work with, it
would be the same ones. They are
very professional and polite."
"I sure hate to lose my seniors,"
she added.
Wilson thanked everyone for
their support of the one-act play
cast and crew, including all
parents and school administra-
tors.
The Albany play, along with
Hamlin's entry, won the two spots
in district competition and were
allowed to advance to the area
contest.
At the district level, three AHS
students were named to the All-
Star Cast — Ford, Parker and
Mikeska.
Six plays were entered in the
area competition — Albany, Ham-
lin, Winters, Seagraves, Coleman
and Shallowater.
Buyers & sellers to be honored
Banuet date rescheduled
Thursday, April 26, has been
set as the date for the annual
Buyer-Seller Banquet, sponsored
by the Shackelford County Youth
and Livestock Association.
The banquet was originally
slated for this Thursday, April 12,
but was re-scheduled due to con-
flicts with the district junior high
and high school track meets.
According to organizers, too
many local youth would be in-
volved in the track meet and
would be unable to attend the
banquet.
The banquet is held each year
to honor the youth and sup-
porters of the livestock show,
which was held in March.

Fandangle memberships sought
By Donnie A. Lucas
The first week of the annual
membership drive for the Fort
Griffin Fandangle brought in
several contributions, but the
drive is behind last year's first-
week numbers.
"We are a little behind last
year's numbers," said Louann
George, Fandangle secretary. "It
is going well, but we are still
waiting on many of the member-
ships to come in."
Letters announcing the begin-
ning of the drive were mailed last
week to prospective and past
members.
The annual membership drive
concludes with the annual Mem-
bership Picnic and Sampler at
Reynolds Bend on the Matthews
Ranch. The sampler, or preview
of the 1990 show, is set for Friday,
May 4.
Contributions received from
the membership drive are used to
make repairs and improvements
to Fandangle property and the
Prairie Theater.
"This year we are laying new
sewer lines to connect with the
city sewer system, working on
the restrooms, improving water
pressure at the theater, and work
is planned to improve the
walkways and seating area."
Three types of memberships
are available, including patron
memberships for donations of
$125 or more. Regular member-
ships at $25 or more, and pioneer
memberships are available for
persons age 65 or older with a $10
or more contribution.
Membership in the Fandangle
offers several opportunities not
available to the general public.
Besides being invited to the
membership picnic and sampler,
members are also recognized in
the programs handed out to au-
diences at the summer perfor-
mances.
One of the biggest advantages
is priority selection of tickets for
the six performances in June —
set this year for June 21-23 and
June 28-30.
"Members have preferred seat
selection until May 21," said
George. "Tickets do not go on sale
to the general public until then, so
members have first choice for
seat selections.
Ticket prices for the summer
performances will remain the
same this year, ranging from $3 to
$10. Group discounts are
available for certain performance
nights.
All memberships are acknow-
ledged with membership cards, a
letter, and ticket tfrder forms.
"We start selling tickets to
members as soon as their mem-
bership dues are received."
Fandangle Office Moving
The Fandangle office is being
moved from the Musselmap Pe-
troleum Building back to the
Rockwell Community Center
(depot) this season.
Instead of sharing an office
with the Albany Chamber of Com-
merce as in the past, the office
will be located in the large
meeting room at the west end of
the depot.
The office will be open in the
mornings during the month of
April, then will remain open all
day for the months of May and
June.
Memberships and ticket orders
can be taken at the depot, or
mailed to the Fandangle, P.O. Box
155, Albany, Texas 76430. Both
memberships and tickets can be
paid for with cash or personal
check, as well as MasterCard,
Visa and Discover credit cards.
Stock show assn. to meet
A general membership meeting
of the Shackelford County Youth
and Livestock Association has
been slated for Saturday, April
21.
The evening will begin with a
fish fry at the county show barn
from 5:30 until 6:30 p.m., accord-
ing to Michael Gruber, county ex-
tension agent. The meeting will
begin at 7:00 p.m. in the court-
house courtroom.
All members of the association
are encouraged to attend this
meeting, because rule changes
and other items of business con-
cerning the 1991 Shackelford
County Livestock Show will be
discussed, according to Gruber.
"Please note that this is a
change from the past, and we will
be discussing our upcoming stock
show," he said.
"If you have any ideas or sug-
gestions about what changes
might benefit our 4-H and FFA
youngsters at next year's junior
livestock show, please plan to at-
tend the fish fry and meeting on
April 21," Gruber continued.
"Everyone is invited and en-
couraged to attend."
The association will not meet as
a group again until approximately
60 days prior to the 1991 show.
Fandangle practice reset
The regular Thursday night
Fort Griffin Fandangle rehearsal
has been cancelled this week be-
cause of Maundy Thursday ser-
vices at the First Christian
Church.
Fandangle Director Marge
Bray stated that rehearsals would
resume "in full" next Thursday,
and encouraged everyone to at-
tend.
"We are really working hard on
the sampler show, and it is impor-
tant that everyone attend who
plans to take part," she said.
The practice will begin at 8:00
p.m. at the Albany Youth Center.
Preparations are being made
for the annual membership
sampler, which is slated for May 4
at Reynolds Bend.
Training session planned
A training session for parents
of children enrolled in the early
childhood education program at
Nancy Smith Elementary School
will be held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday,
April 19, in the NSES Cafeteria.
Dr. Stephen M. Osborn,
Abilene psychologist and school
consultant, will speak on
"Behavioral and Emotional Devel-
opments of Young Children." A
question and answer period will
follow.
Free child care will be provided
during the training session, which
is sponsored by the Albany ISD
and Tri-County Education Co-Op.
